Emily SmithHello folksI hope you are all well and cheery. Sorry I have been out of touch since the New Year. January was a busy time as always for folkies here in Scotland with Celtic Connections festival taking place in Glasgow.

I hope you are all well and cheery. Sorry I have been out of touch since the New Year. January was a busy time as always for folkies here in Scotland with Celtic Connections festival taking place in Glasgow.
This year I was involved in 2 shows – one being a concert of Robert Tannahill songs and the other with my fellow songwriters from the Burnsong Song House (the songwriting project I took part in back in Nov 2005.) February being a short month came and went in a flash, I spent most of it on tour.... Emily Smith
As mentioned above I was out on tour with the Burnsong songwriters for much of January. We did a Tune up Tour around Scotland. It was a fantastic time for us to all get together again and resurrect the songs we wrote together in 2005. Our Glasgow show in the City Halls was packed and received top class reviews in the Scotsman and The Herald.

I went straight from the Tune Up our in January to my first tour of Germany with my own band. We did 11 shows in 11 days and I was overwhelmed by the great response from the German audiences. It was a pleasure to play to such enthusiastic listeners and the majority of the shows were sold out. I think a lot of the response I had was down to the reaction from the concert I recorded for Radio Bremen back in August 2005 – so thank you very much to them. I definitely hope to return to Germany so will keep you posted as to when that may take place. A HUGE thanks to all who came along, the generosity and hospitality of the excellent venues and promoters and especially thanks to my agents Celtic Sound.
There are a few photos from the tour in the gallery page on my website. http://www.emilysmith.org/gallery.asp
During Celtic Connections I recorded a song for BBC4 which will be shown on one of 2 programmes they have made about the festival. I sang ‘May Colven’, a traditional ballad which will be on my new album and performing with me were regular band mate Jamie McClennan and new guy Ross Milligan on guitar.
The programme will be aired on Saturday 17th March at 9pm.
I spent last weekend at the International Folk Alliance Conference in Memphis, Tennessee. I’m one of the lucky artists who were selected to showcase at this year’s conference. The conference is a major event where promoters, agents, record labels and media working in the folk scene in North America gather to attend workshops, lectures and scout out new acts. I attended last year in association with Burnsong as part of a song writing project and thanks to the support of the Scottish Arts Council I had an equally fantastic time again this year.
We even managed to find time to fit in visits to Graceland, Beale Street and Sun Studios!
You may or may not know that my gig in Crawfordjohn on the 3rd of March will be the last with Steve Byrne as my guitarist. Steve has played in the band for almost three years now and we’ve had some really great times (and some foosty ones too...;)!)on tour. It was decided late last year, in an amicable way, that it was time for Steve to hang up his Emily Smith shoes (not sure if that’s the best expression!) so that he can concentrate on other projects. Myself and Jamie wish him all the very best for the future and if he’s reading this, then – love ya man, don’t ever change...
Ready and waiting to take over from Steve is fantastic Borders based guitarist Ross Milligan. Ross has been working with me on my new material over the winter and apart from the brief BBC4 recording, will make his debut performance with me at the Rothes Halls, Glenrothes on March 9th.
