The NarcisoMartinezCulturalArtsCenter is proud to present a tribute to an iconic duet of Norteño music, Los Alegres de Teran. Hailing from General Teran, Nuevo Leon, the duet is given credit for pioneering intricate harmonies in soulful corridos and rancheras which have become a staple of Mexican accordion roots music. They began their partnership in the 1940’s and reached wide audiences when they settled in McAllen, Texas and recorded under the Falcon record label.
Accordionist Eugenio Abrego died in 1988 and bajista Tomas Ortiz passed away in November, 2007. To give tribute to the duet, “El Second Weensdee” will feature a lecture by historian Francisco Ramos Aguirre, author of the book Los Alegres de Teran: Vida y Canciones. Mr. Ramos Aguirre is a professor, editor and cultural activist in the state of Tamaulipas who specializes on Norteño life, music and culture. Also remembering his musical colleagues will be another legendary Norteño musician, Don Ramiro Cavazos of Los Donneños. Mr. Cavazos will tell stories and share memorable songs of his cultural contemporaries.
Also featured this “Second Weensdee” will be the work of Brownsville Chicano artist, George Castorena. His show, “Me Vale,” highlights art drawn from his life, engaging memories of the struggles of family and friends from el barrio. Castorena received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Texas at Brownsville, but he also studied art in Texas A&I University in Kingsville in the 1970’s. His current show features 60 pieces.
"El Second Weensdee" is an oral history project featuring a local cultural treasure - conjunto music. Admission to the event is $5.00. The NarcisoMartinezCulturalArtsCenter preserves, promotes and advances the rich cultural heritage of the "Mexicano" community through arts programming. This is going to be a great presentation. Incredible history of Los Alegres de Teran. Flaco Jimenez is a huge Alegres fan that when he recorded with Los Caporales (Flaco & Alredo Ojeda), his sound or choice of songs were similar to Los Alegres. I will be doing a podcast on some of these songs in the near future. Cristina, I will be calling you and hopefully you will be video taping el maestro Don Ramiro Cavazos.
Or maybe some of our forum members from the valley can record this historical event for us.Gilberto
