This year is the 50th anniversary of the founding of a genre of music that hasn't received the amount of attention that I believe it should have done. Compas direct music, also known as kompas direk, from Haiti is simply sublime.

It was conceived by two competing big band leaders, Nemours Jean-Baptiste and Webert Sicot. The early bands featured brass sections and a rhythm section that featured bass, drums, guitar, congas and accordion.
