Our club night on Monday 18th February was the best turnout for a long time with around 60 people in attendance.
We were expecting ONE guest artiste but in fact we had TWO!
Gary Blair brought with him his son (also Gary (Jnr.)) who, at the age of 16 plays very confidently and professionally in a similar style to his father. Although they are basically Scottish players, they cover a great range of music from all over the world in both popular and classical vein.
Tunes worthy of a special mention: Gary Snr. played an interesting Shetland tune "The Hen's March to the Midden"with notes sounding exactly like a hen clucking. He also played a request from Bill Thomas for "Flowers of Scotland". This has something to do with Scots/Welsh Rugby matches!
Gary Jnr. played an outstanding Monti's "Czardas".
They each played 2 sessions followed by tunes as a Duo, and the evening ended with a "Stramash" which included Andy, Neil, Bernie (our guest from Dunfermaline), Chalky, and a visiting folk player also originally from Scotland - Alan. A band of all Scots.
"Stramash" is a Scots word which in music circles means a mass busk.
Thanks must also go to Bernie and Andy, each giving a performance. Andy included the lament "Dark Island" which was dedicated to the late Elizabeth Jones who often used to request this tune.
A sympathy card in memory of Elizabeth and Fraser who died only last April, was signed by all the members and has been sent to their daughter Samantha.
More sad news came in the death of David Keen (editor of the Accordion World Magazine) at just 52 of cancer.
The next meeting is on Monday 10th March and is a club night, when Tony Trentham is going to do a short spot explaining the technicalities of electronics as applied to accordions.
