Accordion Inspired Architecture
Dec., 9, 2007
As the tryptophan-induced Thanksgiving haze wears off, I thought I’d share a couple examples of accordion-inspired architecture that I’d run across recently. The first comes from Buenos Aires, where the city has just dedicated a new monument to tango music in the shape of a giant steel bandoneon. The tango has long been an integral part of Argentinian culture and this monument joins statues and plaques in Buenos Aires honoring tango legends like Carlos Gardel, Osvaldo Pugliese and Astor Piazzolla.

The second isn’t reality (yet), but is a design by London architect Ken Shuttleworth for a 10-story accordion-shaped building that will border Christopher Wren’s Monument to The Great Fire Of London. The building’s rooftop garden will double as a sundial, using the shadow from Wren’s Monument to indicate the time.

My favorite piece of accordion architecture, though, is still the old San Francisco accordion school — Theodore School of Music on Union Street — with its entire second floor shaped like an accordion.

Review - Gordon Pattullo - his Accordion and his Friends
Nov., 24, 2007
Gordon Pattullo is one of the elite of Scotland’s accordionists, widely respected as a soloist, bandleader and composer.  This new DVD is a showcase for his musical talents, and will be compulsive viewing for anyone who loves Scottish accordion music.  You will be watching a master at his craft.
This is an excellent production in every way: great music - immaculately played, lots of camera close ups highlighting the treble and bass sides of the accordion, first class sound and picture quality, illuminating interviews, and beautiful scenery from the east and west coasts of Scotland. Most of the music was filmed at the Red House Hotel, Coupar Angus, and the Wellbank Hall, Dundee. The DVD lasts for a total of 78 minutes.
The music is interspersed with Gordon being interviewed by Bill Torrance, giving insights into his life and music.  If you just want to watch the music, however, just press the forward button and you can skip the interviews.  The ‘chat’ part of the DVD also has brief contributions from fiddler Ian Powrie, and accordionists Freeland Barbour, Tom Alexander and Billy Anderson, giving a ‘This Is Your Life’ feel to the narrative.  Of the music, my favourite tracks were ‘The Dark Island’, set brilliantly against island background scenes, the exciting ‘Orange Blossom Special’, and the last track, ‘The Furrows End’, one of Gordon’s compositions and a beautiful melody played against a background showing two huge Clydesdale horses ploughing a field (on Gordon’s farm in Angus).

Backing musicians include John Crawford - piano, Angela MacEachern - fiddle, son Fraser Pattullo on Low Whistle, Brian Cruickshank – bass, and Billy Thom - drums.  Their contributions underpin Gordon’s accordion playing perfectly, adding to the musical texture yet remaining largely unobtrusive.
The DVD extras include notes on the careers of the musicians involved, and an interesting behind the scenes look at what goes on in a recording studio.
The 16 tracks including ‘Bonnie Strathmore’, ‘Hornpipe Selection’, ‘The Cuckoo Waltz’, ‘Tribute to Will Starr’, ‘Lament for Jack Miller’, ‘The Flying Scotsman’, ‘The Dark Island’, ‘The Four String Polka’, ‘Waltzes’, ‘Fraser's Favourites’, ‘Tribute to Sir Jimmy Shand’, ‘The Orange Blossom Special’, ‘Kiwi Pipers Medley’, ‘The Sands of Kuwait’, ‘Scotch 'n' Irish’, and ‘The Furrows End’.

It is now 50 years since they made their first appearance as professional entertainers at the Webster Theatre in Arbroath, Scotland. Ross Bowie became their Manager, an association that lasted 35 years. He introduced them to songwriter Tony Hatch who took them to London and recording fame. They had their own TV series for many years and appeared on the legendary 'Sunday Night at the London Palladium'. They have appeared in all the top venues all over the world including the Carnegie Hall, New York and the famous Sydney Opera House. http://www.alexanderbrothers.com/

In recent years Tom & Jack were awarded the MBE by her Majesty The Queen at Buckingham Palace for their services to music, "This was a very proud moment for both of us" said Tom, "We're just a couple of boys fae Scotland" Said Jack...well deserved I think we would all say.

Freak Out, Polka Style
Nov., 18, 2007
Take one accordion virtuoso from Pennsylvania, son of a polka legend, with a diverse background in jazz, pop, and folk. Take one bass player from Texas, formerly of Brave Combo, known for rocking Tex-Mex and cumbias with Los Super Vatos. Put them together and what do you get? Polka Freak Out!Polka Freak Out is a collaboration between Alex Meixner and Bubba Hernandez that combines polka styles from around the world (Slovenian, Austrian, Polish, you name it) with conjunto/tejano rhythms and rock and roll energy and enthusiasm. It started with a casual jam session a few years ago, while Hernandez was passing through Alex’s area during a Brave Combo tour. Now they’ve released their first self-titled album, which includes guest appearances by bajo sexto legend Max Baca and Texas Tornado keyboardist Augie Meyers. The duo will be out on the road later this month, with shows in New York, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Chicago. Check our calendar for details.Polka Freak Out: Uzmi (MP3 sample)
eBay Find: Accordion Home Study Course
Nov., 18, 2007
Can’t find an accordion teacher in your area? Don’t have time for formal lessons? The U.S. School of Music had a solution: an accordion home study course available via mail order. This particular set — copyright 1930, but mailed in 1942 — contains four lesson books (”Home Study Lessons for Piano and Chromatic Accordion”), as well as twelve records to accompany the lessons. I’m tempted to bid just so I can get a closer look at the study materials. Plus, I’ve always wanted to take a correspondence course… in accordion.

Stockport Accordion Club News
Nov., 18, 2007
Harry Hussey was the guest at Stockport AC on Sep 12th
 Stockport Accordion Club - Newsletter
Harry Hussey was the guest at Stockport AC on September 12th, entertaining and amazing his audience as only he can.  As is his custom, Harry had no prepared programme and took audience requests for the whole of his one and half hours spot.  His numbers included ‘Glenn Miller Medley’, ‘April Showers’, ‘Tea for Two’, ‘Siboney’, ‘Autumn Leaves’, ‘Cheek to Cheek’, ‘Domino’, Girl From Ipanema’, ‘Green Eyes’, ‘Ciribiribin’, ‘Poor Butterfly’, ‘September Song’, ‘Stardust’, ‘Dancing in the Dark’, Guantanamera’, ‘On the Sunny Side of the Street’, ‘Sway’, ‘Wave’, ‘Jealousy’, ‘Take Five’, and ‘Begin the Beguine’.  He also did some magical unrehearsed duets with SAC Vice President John Nixon on English concertina, and these included ’It’s a Sin to Tell a Lie’, ‘Fascinating Rhythm’, ‘As Time Goes By’, ‘Don’t Fence Me In’, ‘Don’t Get Around Much Anymore’, ‘I Wish You Love’, and ‘How High the Moon’.  We had a good turnout, and one of our visitors, the well-known comedian/ folk singer/ actor Bernard Wrigley commented aptly on Harry’s performance: "Not only technical brilliance, but played with soul, warmth and wit."

Also performing were Rob Howard, Ann Parker, Ray Peacock, Martina Hall and John Higham.  The evening also saw the first public appearance (I hesitate to call it a book launch) of ‘An A to Z of the Accordion, Volume 3’, which sold very well indeed on the night.  People are already asking me about doing Volume 4, but I am presently side stepping that question in order to preserve my sanity!
John Jones and I recently played French style before/during interval at two screenings of ‘La Vie En Rose’ at the Plaza in Stockport.  This film is a compelling and brilliantly done biography of Edith Piaf, very engagingly told (even though it is in French, with sub-titles) and includes lots of great songs and much accordion music.  The DVD comes out on November 26th.
In late September we had an unexpected visit from accordionist Grant ‘Yogi’ Martin, on holiday with his wife and manager Susie in Glossop, Derbyshire, from New Zealand.  Yogi, a Maori, borrowed Tony Wynroe’s Kratt 120 bass and played this accordion, followed by a stint on his own Roland FR7, putting on an amazing impromptu mini concert.  Using the Roland’s multiplicity of orchestral voices and combinations, his performances of such pieces as ‘Autumn Leaves’ and ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ were quite startling.  Yogi is a most accomplished performer with a unique playing style, and is particularly well known in China, with over 40 concerts in China to his credit plus appearances on Chinese television.  Look out for him if he comes your way.
On Tuesday October 30th the Stockport AC Orchestra are the guests at Chester Accordion Club, and on Friday December 7th both the SAC Band & Orchestra play our annual charity Christmas concert at the Broken Cross Institute, Macclesfield.  John Jones organises the latter event, and he can be contacted for info/ tickets on 01625 618 691.
The next SAC Club Night concert is on Wednesday November 14th, featuring the welcome return of Romano Viazzani.
Soon I shall be heading off to Caister, for the great annual pilgrimage…
