In search of "Lars Ek Nostalgic Piano Accordion"
Feb., 17, 2008
Hello Everybody:
I am new to this UKAO forum. I live in the USA and I have been playing the accordion for a while. I will post a few links below.
I am looking for a specific accordion, the "Lars Ek Nostalgic" Piano Accordion, which was manufactured by Borsini a while back. I believe most were made in chromatic button style; however a few were made in the piano accordion style. If you know of someone who would be interested in selling such an accordion, please pass it along.
Meanwhile, feel free to peruse my CD and other info below.
All the best,
Zevy

Rocket-Fuelled - The Gary Blair Ceilidh Band - Hogmanay @ Stirling Castle
Feb., 17, 2008

Gary Blair @ Stirling Castle - Photo courtesy of David Palmer

It was a dreich night at the top of the town and what might well have been the best post-midnight fireworks show yet for Stirling's Hogmanay was semi-obscured by low cloud, but the big yellow Sold Out signs on the road up to the castle told their own story. A capacity 7000 crowd had recognised that Craig and Charlie's best 12-month since there was Sunshine on Leith guaranteed a rousing party at the bells. Certainly, supporting trio the Gary Blair Ceilidh Band were prepared to give their all in the cause. Invited back after last year's cancellation, they are a rocket-fuelled take on tradition: strict-time snare drumming, and fiddle and box operating at maximum velocity. Not joining in the massed bad waltzing would have been churlish and other telling contributions from the punters included a sweetly sung, non-belligerent, Flower of Scotland, and a massed jaw-drop at Blair's lightning-fingered version of Simon Jeffes's Music for a Found Harmonium.

The Proclaimers are the only band in the world who can spice up Hogmanay with a song - In Recognition - condemning those named in the New Year's Honours List. Shame Hanif Kureishi wasn't there to hear it, say I. If that nice irony was lost on some, that was true of much of the early part of the set, drawn from their latest Life With You album. It was, predictably, more familiar fare like On My Way, Cap in Hand, the still-hackle-raising Letter From America, and I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) that lifted the occasion (although a few chaps could be seen looking at their shoes during Let's Get Married). Before an unusually low-pitched, if up-tempo Auld Lang Syne, however, the surprise climax was provided by the Reids' big brash cover of Wreckless Eric's Whole Wide World. Now why was that single not the international hit it deserved to be?

New Hohner Accordions for 2008
Jan., 3, 2008
Gilbert Reyes of Reyes Accordions recently shared some photos of the new diatonic accordions that Hohner will unveil at the NAMM Show later this month. These three new “Xtreme” models have 34 buttons (the standard Corona has 31) and include reed switches — three on the Tex-Mex Corona II Xtreme and five on the norteo and vallenato tuned Corona III Xtremes. They certainly seem designed to compete with Gabbanelli accordions, which have long been popular in the Conjunto/Tejano scene.Hohner Corona II XtremeHohner Corona II Xtreme
(same model as above, but in a color that gives me flashbacks)
Hohner Corona III N XtremeHohner Corona III V XtremeInterestingly, Gilbert built his own 34-button Hohner a couple years ago by modifying an existing Hohner Corona II. I’m sure he played a role in Hohner’s decision to release these new models.I haven’t seen any specifications or pricing information yet, but I’ll update this post as soon as I hear more (probably after the NAMM Show).
The Octonauts
Jan., 3, 2008
I recently came across a children’s book called The Octonauts and the Sea of Shade, by Meomi. I was delighted to find out that the main character, Captain Barnacles Bear, plays the accordion!Check it out to see how the Captain and the Octonauts save the Sea of Shade. (I’ll give you a hint: the Captain’s accordion is involved!) This is a great book for kids. And definitely a great last-minute holiday gift for your favorite accordion-loving kid-at-heart, too!

Luttbeg Double Keyboard Accordions
Jan., 3, 2008
Many years ago when Ebay was in its infancy I remember seeing an accordion with a piano keyboard on each side. I saved the picture somewhere, but can't reach it at the moment and may have lost it.I've never seen another one of these oddities until today. Here on Ebay in the UK is a Soprani Luttbeg. As far as I can make out these accordions don't have a real name - so I propose that these are called Luttbeg Accordions after the inventor Max B. Luttbeg.Max B. Luttbeg arrived in New York from Russia in the early 1900s. He was a famous wrestler and this picture of him is in the Library of Congress. Max is the one kneeling. After he retired from wrestling he went on the vaudeville circuit playing accordion and also made his own improvements to accordions. The patent for the 'Luttbeg Accordion' was filed in January 1931 in the US, and a further patent improving the system was submitted in January 1932. As well as Soprani at least one other manufacturer made Luttbeg accordions as John Gaunt's site has pictures of two types of Soprani and also a Bertini. The site also claims that only 12 Luttbegs were ever made. The reason that these accordions never caught on will be clear to anyone that plays the piano accordion. It's very hard to push the bellows at the same time as holding your hand in the right position to play a piano style keyboard. It seems that Max Luttbeg himself recognised these problems and submitted another patent in 1939 - this time for a 36 button layout. Each button sounded a single note and complex chords could be played by pressing combinations of buttons. Sadly I don't know if any of these accordions were ever built. If anybody has any further information on the Luttbeg accordions then please leave a comment.Link: Soprani Luttbeg on Ebay
