2nd Fresno Gathering in Feb.....???
Feb., 23, 2008
What's up guys, I just wanted to ask you all if you'd be interested in gathering again in Feb? I don't want to play the gathering out by having them too close together so i thought i would ask you all what you thought....If you are all down to gather again i was thinking to gather the first weekend of every month...if that is too soon, maybe since we gathered on the1st weekend of Jan. maybe we could gather on the 2nd weekend of Feb, then in March the 3rd weekend and so on to allow an extra week, not just 30 days apart...Anyway I'm down to gather any day.....How does the 10th of Feb. sound? It's a Sunday again. I think Sunday's are good because most musicians that play in a group have gigs on Sat....Let me know what you all think so we could get this set......hope more people could join our great gatherings....thanks hope to hear from all you interested soon.... For the next gathering I think that Sunday Feb. 10 is good for me......Lets get this going again.....any one interested?

Squeeze Me
Feb., 17, 2008
Chris and I have had babies on the brain lately. There’s so much cool stuff out there for kids and babies nowadays! We love these “Squeeze Me” onesies featuring our favorite instrument on the front. Gotta get the kids interested in accordions young, I always say. And these onesies are extra cool because they’re made with organic cotton. This is definitely the must-have fashion item for the new baby in your life.If you missed them the first time, more accordion-related clothing products that we’ve come across and posted about can be found here in our clothing category.

Milen Slavov Teaches Anytime, Anywhere
Feb., 17, 2008
Bulgaria seems to have no shortage of great accordionists and Milen Slavov is one of the brightest lights in Balkan traditional and contemporary music. He moved to America in 1997 and currently performs, composes, produces, and teaches throughout the United States and Canada. I know a few of our readers saw him perform with the Yuri Yunakov Ensemble at the International Accordion Festival in San Antonio last year. We’ve seen some online accordion lesson courses before, but nothing quite like the ones that Milen is currently offering through his website. He offers both custom audio (he’ll send you an MP3) and custom video lessons based around one of four subjects: ornaments in Bulgarian music, Bulgarian/Balkan piano accordion music, phrases and techniques, or improvisation. Even cooler, though, you can schedule face-to-face lessons to be conducted via webcam.Normally, I’m a little skeptical of online video lessons because there’s no substitute for the feedback you get from a real teacher. But I’ll admit I’m intrigued by the possibility of taking lessons (even long-distance ones) from one of the world’s top accordionists. If anyone out there takes a lesson from Milen, let us know. I’d be really curious to hear how it goes.

In search of "Lars Ek Nostalgic Piano Accordion"
Feb., 17, 2008
Hello Everybody:
I am new to this UKAO forum. I live in the USA and I have been playing the accordion for a while. I will post a few links below.
I am looking for a specific accordion, the "Lars Ek Nostalgic" Piano Accordion, which was manufactured by Borsini a while back. I believe most were made in chromatic button style; however a few were made in the piano accordion style. If you know of someone who would be interested in selling such an accordion, please pass it along.
Meanwhile, feel free to peruse my CD and other info below.
All the best,
Zevy

Rocket-Fuelled - The Gary Blair Ceilidh Band - Hogmanay @ Stirling Castle
Feb., 17, 2008
Gary Blair @ Stirling Castle - Photo courtesy of David PalmerIt was a dreich night at the top of the town and what might well have been the best post-midnight fireworks show yet for Stirling's Hogmanay was semi-obscured by low cloud, but the big yellow Sold Out signs on the road up to the castle told their own story. A capacity 7000 crowd had recognised that Craig and Charlie's best 12-month since there was Sunshine on Leith guaranteed a rousing party at the bells. Certainly, supporting trio the Gary Blair Ceilidh Band were prepared to give their all in the cause. Invited back after last year's cancellation, they are a rocket-fuelled take on tradition: strict-time snare drumming, and fiddle and box operating at maximum velocity. Not joining in the massed bad waltzing would have been churlish and other telling contributions from the punters included a sweetly sung, non-belligerent, Flower of Scotland, and a massed jaw-drop at Blair's lightning-fingered version of Simon Jeffes's Music for a Found Harmonium. The Proclaimers are the only band in the world who can spice up Hogmanay with a song - In Recognition - condemning those named in the New Year's Honours List. Shame Hanif Kureishi wasn't there to hear it, say I. If that nice irony was lost on some, that was true of much of the early part of the set, drawn from their latest Life With You album. It was, predictably, more familiar fare like On My Way, Cap in Hand, the still-hackle-raising Letter From America, and I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) that lifted the occasion (although a few chaps could be seen looking at their shoes during Let's Get Married). Before an unusually low-pitched, if up-tempo Auld Lang Syne, however, the surprise climax was provided by the Reids' big brash cover of Wreckless Eric's Whole Wide World. Now why was that single not the international hit it deserved to be?The Herald -http://www.theherald.co.uk/

Review: CD - Bits and Pieces (Tom Alexander)
Jan., 11, 2008
Tom Alexander is best known as the accordion playing half of the long established Scottish vocal/instrumental duo, The Alexander Brothers. His new, self-produced solo CD Bits and Pieces is a worthy exposition of his talents as a musician, arranger and recording engineer.  The CD presents a variety of accordion specialities and Scottish melodies – all performed and recorded to a high standard on a Hohner Gola.  The warm and rounded tones produced by Tom’s classy playing and intonation are a real pleasure to listen to, making this CD most definitely a cut above the average. In addition to being a very fine accordionist, Tom has become a master of MIDI sequencing, and the arrangements on this CD offers an array of many very convincing sounds in support of the accordion lead.  The CD opens in bright style with El Relicario, a number beloved of accordionists everywhere.  Catchy tunes abound on this recording, such as the Petite Waltz, Lady of Spain, The Dark Island and Jealousy.  Although not a Scottish dance music CD, two of the most memorable melodies are dance tunes, the Piper’s Waltz, written by Blair Douglas, and The Furrow’s End, a beautiful waltz composed by Gordon Pattullo.  On Dance of the Hours and Tristesse, Tom diverts convincingly into the classics, with the former being an orchestral treatment/arrangement whilst the latter delves into the works of Chopin.  My favourite track is the imaginatively arranged Whistling Rufus, which begins as the usual ragtime two-step, then moves into an Art Van Damme ‘lounge jazz’ mood, next into a Dixieland style, and finishes with a Jack Emblow-like freewheeling jazzy flourish – all in the space of about three minutes! All in all, this CD is a highly satisfying listening experience, thoroughly recommended for anyone who enjoys quality accordion playing.     The 20 tracks include El Relicario, Isle of My Heart, The Flowers of Edinburgh, Petite Waltz, Skye At Last, Lady of Spain, The Dark Island, Whistling Rufus, Eilean Gorm Mhuile, Dance of the Hours, Tom's Medley, Tristesse, March, Strathspey & Reel, Piper's Waltz, Jealousy, Farewell to Kintail, The Furrow's End, The Oil Rigger, Highland Cathedral and Under the Double Eagle.Available from Concorde Music, Perth – tel 01738 621 818 or email: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it Rob Howard
Book Review: Sights by Susanna Vance
Jan., 11, 2008
There aren’t many young adult novels involving accordions, but Bruce Triggs found one. Bruce — co-host of the excellent Accordion Noir radio show in Vancouver — penned this book review for Let’s Polka:I picked up Susanna Vance’s book Sights, because the (hardback) cover is of a girl playing accordion. I was literally on my way to the Vancouver (BC) Accordion Circle, where I was quick to show it off.Sights tells the story of a 13-year-old girl who’s had what’s euphemistically called a “tough” childhood, moving to a new school and making friends with some other outcasts and forming a band. She plays accordion… they rock… cool! I wanted her to be a big Johnny Grande fan (accordionist with Bill Haley and the Comets), but he isn’t mentioned.I was really impressed with the “sound” of the narrator (who’s name is Baby Doll). Without telling where she is from, she gives a really consistent rural USA sound to the book. I’ve lived a lot of places in America, and she sounded kind of Okie/Appalachian. I’m not sure where she’s from, but it’s really nice.It has grimmer aspects than Victoria Miles’ Magnifico, the other teen book I know with accordion content. People should be aware that it deals matter-of-factly with subjects like child abuse and adolescent sexuality, but I do recommend it. (I similarly have to remember to tell people that Annie Proulx’s Accordion Crimes is kinda violent, which I overlook in the richness of it all.)There are elements of fantasy in the story’s vision of 1950’s USA. I wouldn’t call it realistic; even the violence is rather odd. But if you’re prepared (by reading this), you should be in for a swell time. You can listen to Accordion Noir, co-hosted by Bruce Triggs and Rowan Lipkovitz, every Friday night on CFRO CO-OP Radio, 102.7 FM in Vancouver, or download episodes online at accordionnoir.org.
