eBay Find: Hohner Magic Organa
Nov., 16, 2008
We’ve seen self-playing accordions before, but this is the first time I’ve seen a Hohner Magic Organa — an automatic accordion built in the 1920s. (Not to be confused with the non-magical Hohner Organa, which was a portable organ.) Music rolls inside the accordion are moved with a spring-wound mechanism over 44 tubes to generate sounds, while a foot pedal connects to the accordion via a hose to power the mechanism. This particular instrument was recently up for auction on eBay and, while bidding reached $2,750, it still didn’t meet the reserve price. As fun as an automatic accordion sounds, $2,750 could buy you a lot of lessons on a real accordion… [Found via The Automata / Automaton Blog]

Eastbourne Accordion Festival - Latest News!
Oct., 31, 2008
Eastbourne Music Festivals are changing their venue. Due to the popularity of their events they are moving to bigger and better hotels for 2009. ‘The Queens Hotel’ will host both the Organ/Keyboard Festival as well as the Accordion Weekend. This beautiful Victorian luxury hotel has higher quality facilities than its predecessor. These include a fabulous domed theatre room, a dedicated ballroom and bar, two lifts, a snooker room, plenty of space for trade stands and its own very large car park. Organiser John Romero says ”After four happy years at the Cumberland Hotel we are sad to be leaving. The Queens Hotel will enable us to offer a better experience as well as expand our size a little”. He went on to say “Due to negotiations we have managed to keep our prices the same as 2008”. Steve Roxton, Richard Adey, Stefan Andrusyschyn, Ian Watson, Julie North, Harry Hussey and Gennaro Fiondella lead the star studded Accordion line up for the 20th - 23rd February 2009 weekend and prices are just £199.00 per person. For those that have not been to Eastbourne you will find they pride themselves on a friendly, family atmosphere where everyone is made welcome. You will find the artists on tap all weekend and not just for a one night concert. Little touches like their welcome envelopes, containing programmes, information and even a special chocolate have become their trademark. Further information has yet to be released however, we can tell you that the September and October festivals are to be held at ‘The Eastbourne Centre’ (formally known as the T & G building). Anyone knowing the Eastbourne seafront will know that this is very very special hotel and one that is sure to enhance Eastbourne Music Festivals reputation even further. For more information visit the EMF website. http://www.carillonstudios.me.uk/music_festivals.htm

Castletown Accordion Orchestra Prague 2008
Oct., 31, 2008
Castletown Accordion Orchestra Castletown Accordion Orchestra with members from Meath, Cavan & Kildare, once again travelled to the European Accordion Festival held in Prague from March 20-23. They entered 2 sections, the Junior (which they won in 2006) and the Light Music Section. They were placed 2nd out of 9 in the Junior which they were delighted with as the standard this year had jumped tremendously from the previous time. In the Light Music Section, they were placed 5th out of 9. This was the first time they had entered this section. The orchestras placed above them were of a very high standard and the majority of them also competed in the Adult Classical section. Whilst in Prague, they were invited to play at the Irish Embassy. This was an immense honour for the Orchestra. The College of Music Prague, the American Embassy and the Luxemburg Embassy were all within earshot and enjoyed the performance immensely. They also played at the opening concert in Liben Castle and the gala concert, held in the beautiful surroundings of the church of St. Simon and Judas, home of the Prague Symphony Orchestra. They also played in the church of St. Salvator. After the festival finished, they travelled down to Southern Bohemia, to the beautiful city of Krumlov, where they played in the local convent which has been converted into a beautiful 5 star hotel. Their next public performance will be at the All Ireland Accordion Festival which will be held in the Venue Theatre, Ratoath on the 12th and 13th April. Pictures byBettyBrennan

Chartres Accordion Festival 2008 - Report by Paul Elliott
Sep., 24, 2008
The 7-8th June marked the 20th anniversary of this event and it was planned to be honoured by the presence of André Verchuren, Yvette Horner and Eugenia Lima. Sadly, Yvette Horner who is 87 could not attend through illness but André who is 88 continues to put us youngsters to shame by playing into the early hours of the morning during the Saturday night ‘bal musette’ and I say this as one of those that missed his performance having to get my head down for a night’s sleep. It was in fact a young Jean Hanger who watched his performance.Eugenia Lima is the ‘grand lady’ of the accordion in Portugal and gave us a taste of her style from this country which has a strong following of the accordion. The festival to date has seen 1200 accordionists from 26 countries, such is it’s international importance. For Claudine Aucher, the organiser, the celebrations were dampened by the recent loss through cancer at the age of 61 of close friend Pascal Sevran who was a French TV celebrity and fervent supporter of the accordion in his TV variety shows and references to him during her speeches clearly had a marked effect on her. As always, French accordion lover Jean and her husband Peter were great company throughout the weekend. Jean’s face glows all weekend at Chartres very much like the usual weather and the threatening storms failed to materialize and as always, Chartres seems to announce the arrival of summertime. Tom and Lillian Patterson flew in from Newcastle for the first time and I hope their time and expense were rewarded. Their company was certainly very much appreciated along with the other 14 Brits who attended. As usual, in an effort to cram in the activities during the weekend it is impossible to see everything, so the spectator has to make choices. Turning now to the artists themselves, there is always something for everybody and being the 20th edition, there were definitely more artists invited this year especially for the Bal Musette scene. As always Belgium is well represented by the ever present André Loppe and Laurent Pire who was last at Chartes many years back. The north of France which has it’s own unique accordion tradition was well represented by Dorothée Lhoir, Carine Vigny and Claude Caron. For the record, the dancers were kept on their toes by a host of other top players such as Emmanuel Rolland, Stéphanie Moreaux, Matilde Royet, Bertrand Hembert, Delphine Lemoine, Jean-Marc Torchy, Frank Vilain, René Grolier, René Guy, Nelson, Didier Couturier and Gabriel Chantrieux. Three other surprise artists who turned up on the Sunday were two young virtuoso players Julien Gonzales and Benoît Nortier and their ‘prof’ Frédéric Deschamps who may be familier to some readers. Many accordionists in France, young and old, are being attracted to more ‘modern’ and ‘cool’ images for the accordion and in doing so introducing the instrument to a younger audience who feel the ‘bal musette’ scene is probably ‘dated’. One such player is Gabriel Chantrieux from the famous town of Le Mans. We caught him expressing himself as part of the ‘Kerar’s World’ group. Plenty of noise, smoke and provocatively dressed young girls around him on stage playing to a young audience in Place Marceau well into the night and no trouble whatsoever. The ‘Bal Musette’ clearly no longer has that ‘Sex Appeal’ with the young. It makes you feel old! Next we come to the ‘Prestige Concert’ which was held in the town hall. This is my world. It was nice to see a young Sabrina Rivière again from the south west of France who is a hard worker but always seems to struggle with her confidence on stage. Nevertheless, an attractive girl with an attractive repertoire who’s mother never had the real chance to play the accordion when she was younger. Another fine player is Carine Vigny who is a pupil of Frédéric Deschamps and now is a fully qualified music teacher. Another fine accordionist playing in the concert was Stéphanie Moreaux from La Rochelle on the west coast of France. She was part of ‘Trio Tango Argentin’ and no surprise they concentrated on tangos bringing the bandoneon, keyboard and clarinet together. I have left the best till last and for me this was a group of two guitarists and a drummer with Jean-Pièrre Ménager on the accordion. The swing style is attractive to me and this group had perfect balance and they were really enjoying themselves, especially the drummer and Jean-Pièrre on the accordion playing standing up with his ‘Victoria’ just like Richard Galliano. As part of their programme they played ‘Libertango’ as hommage to Astor Piazzolla, a waltz in the swing style as hommage to Jo Privat and a Bossa Nova with improvisation not too overdone. I complimented him on his fantastic music afterwards and he pointed me to a Web site http://www.jazzmenko.com/ where more info and pictures of the group can be found. Needless to say, they were my latest discovery. Through Jean Hanger who has struck up a friendship with Claudine Aucher, all the Brits were invited to a cocktail party with all the artists including André Verchuren in attendance. What an honour to be in the same room as the great man. He has had a tough life and a blessed one too. Probably the most recorded accordionist in France, if not the world who has been associated with many of the greatest singers of ‘French Chanson’ over the years. His popularity with the people of France will not be repeated as an accordionist and he will remain symbolic of Frenchness long after he dies. It was such a pity that Yvette Horner was not able to make it to the event which would have made for an extraordinary meeting of two great personalities. To make the annual trip to France more cost effective, I have travelled onto Tulle each year in the department of Corrèze with my father Fred to visit the Maugein accordion factory and the director Mr René Lachèze who always has a warm welcome and a cup of coffee ready and you never know who you might meet by chance. This year we discovered a Daniel Westwood from Hastings in Kent who has been working at the factory for 9 months on work experience in woodcraft. This year I chose to make some changes to the left hand registers on my accordion which would take two days to complete. This gave us the chance to relax in the area which is one of the remoter parts of France where the accordion tradition is strong. But don’t expect to find any accordion shops in town! Tulle is by the way the location for another week long festival of accordion in September called ‘Nuits de Nacre’. I haven’t been yet but it is fast becoming an important meeting place and cultural centre for the accordion and accordionists. Report by Paul Elliott

Accordion Teaching Week at St Audries Bay - 8th/13th September 2008 - Report
Sep., 24, 2008
Gennaro Fiondella - Pear-Fawcett Adriano - Harry Hussey at St Audries Bay TheAccordion Shop was there for three days with a wonderful selection of instruments and accessories. There was a large range of music available from Trevani who was there until Tuesday evening. We appreciated the opportunity to browse and buy. Gary Blair was at St Audries Bay Daily seminars covered a range of styles and techniques. Gary Blair gave two Scottish workshops full of hints and tips on ornaments, bellows shakes and repeated notes which helped us appreciate why we do not sound like Gary! This was a chance to play a few good tunes, especially the beautiful Heidi’s Waltz – I wish I'd written that. Angie Lukins led four jolly Folk and Barn Dance seminars putting us through our paces with a good selection of tunes which culminated in an entertaining concert on Thursday evening. Gennaro Fiondella worked hard with the mixed ability orchestra. He had just four sessions and yet managed to achieve a polished performance of three pieces – well done Gerry. The wonderful Harry Hussey led three jazz seminars which were much enjoyed. Harry explained how the basic elements of jazz can be changed and demonstrated with simple tunes; how to get from A to B using riffs, how to construct a 12 bar blues and worked towards improvising a blues. He also led the guest busking sessions every evening in the bar, but it never stops there as Harry can almost always be found in the bar jamming with anyone willing or playing requests. He did mysteriously disappear for a short time on Wednesday evening. Suffice to say I have classified information but will keep it to myself (FOR NOW). Be nice to me Harry or I will spill the beans and reveal the secrets of what went on in Shed No 108!! John Romero kept busy with four Electronic and Midi workshops. Too technical for me but in the first session he described midi channels and gave an overview of the various systems available. It soon became obvious that people have different requirements and so subsequent sessions were geared to individual needs. Boxes were ‘operated’ on, knobs fiddled with, wires tangled and a lot of muttering went on. A number of technical problems were sorted and everyone was happy. Pearl Adrianoarrived on Wednesday evening and if anyone was flagging her arrival lifted spirits to thesky. Pearl gave two excellent seminars which were useful for all standards and abilities. She covered manyaspects of technique all underpinned by correct use and control of the bellows and ended each session with a funplay that everyone could join in. Now we can all boast that we have ‘performed’ part of The William Tell Overture with Pearl. I had to include the definition of a musical snob – one who hears this overture without thinking of "The Lone Ranger" Every evening there were concerts given by the artists plus a guest concert. Gary, Gerry, John and Pearl were all fantastic. The list of repertoire played is too long to write here but it was ambitious, demanding and varied – and very well received. Two birthdays were celebrated during the week. Alex reached the grand old age of five and there was, of course, cake and a rollicking game of Pass the Parcel. Then Harry reached the grand old age of many, many fives (and a four) which meant more cake and another game of Pass the Parcel. A cause for concern is that we all thoroughly enjoyed this competitive game; there was even a spot of foul play! To sum up, a week of music and laughter with friends and a chance to indulge in our favourite hobby. My only personal disappointment was that Ron would not let me scrub his back! John has promised to run the event next year and has many exciting plans. All he needs is YOUR support. See you there! Report by Rene Mairis - Isle of WightRene Mairis - Accordionist & Composer
