Franz Nicolay’s Accordions

 I’m always curious to hear what gear “professional” accordion players are carrying around — and it’s even better to hear the stories behind their choices. Franz Nicolay, keyboard/accordion player for The Hold Steady, recently posted on the band’s message board in response to a question asking what kind of accordion he plays. Turns out he currently has three: a red 72-bass Hohner Concerto II, a full-size 120-bass Galanti, and a ladies-size 120-bass Iorio Candido. I liked the bittersweet story behind the Galanti:“The really good one is a full-size 120-bass Galanti, an Italian beast I bought off a Bulgarian fellow named Sergio in Forest Hills about five years ago. I found him on Yahoo Classifieds; it’s kind of a sad story: he’d emigrated with his brother fifty years earlier, and they’d always lived together, worked together, never married, and after work they’d play accordion duets in the basement. When his brother died, he couldn’t bring himself to play alone. So he gave me an incredible deal, because, he said, ‘I can tell you’re a musician and I want it to go to someone who’ll play it.’” In addition to The Hold Steady, Franz plays with a number of other groups, including the World/Inferno Friendship Society, Anti-Social Music, and Guignol, and he just released his solo debut, Major General.

 We’re two weeks away from the Grammys and, while you probably won’t see Cedric Watson on TV, he could walk away with the Best Cajun/Zydeco Album award. A skilled multi-instrumentalist — he plays both accordion and fiddle — Watson is part of the recent Cajun/Zydeco youth movement that includes his old band the Pine Leaf Boys, Feufollet, Lost Bayou Ramblers, and many others.  - Charles Camilleri (1931-2009)
In the 1950s and 60s, Charles Camilleri was one of the world's best-known and most admired international accordionists, and he performed in many countries worldwide. Camilleri was a familiar figure in Britain during these years, and was the chief guest artiste at the 1958 and 1966 'Accordion Day' All-Britain Championships concerts.
Born in Malta in 1931, Charles was immersed in the accordion and the piano from a young age. He formed a band whose members were all aged under sixteen, playing at local functions, and was also performing as a solo accordionist in concerts. At the age of twelve, Charles became the first accordionist to appear in concert at the Opera House in Malta, playing selections from La Traviata, accompanied by a 40-piece orchestra.
As a teenager, Charles played with every orchestra in Malta, on accordion and piano, and also played in small combos specialising in Continental style dance music. He was very versatile, equally at home in a range of genres, including classical music. After one such performance on the classical platform, Camilleri was encouraged to pursue a career in music by the tenor Tito Gobbi, of the New York Metropolitan Opera House.
In 1949, Camilleri's father took the family to Sydney, Australia, where he had secured a job as a tuner/repairer for Hohner. Charles formed a combo that played in nightclubs and jazz venues, and did many radio broadcasts. He also taught the accordion, founded his own Accordion Academy, and published his Studies for the Piano Accordion. In 1955, Camilleri attended the CIA Coupe Mondiale World Championships, held in Brighton, England, not as a competitor, but as the Australian representative.
In 1950s and 60s Camilleri lived variously in Toronto, New York and London. In Britain, Camilleri became a familiar and welcome figure at NAO and BCA accordion events – adjudicating, performing, teaching and holding master classes. He wrote The Camilleri Complete Accordion Method, published in 1958 by Francis, Day & Hunter Ltd. In 1960 he recorded an LP titled Spectacular Accordions. When Malcolm Gee organised his very first Autumn Accordion Festival, held at Pontins Sands Bay Holiday Camp in Somerset in November 1982, Camilleri was present.
Charles Camilleri, long acknowledged as Malta's national composer, composed hundreds of works for accordion, piano, organ, clarinet, violin, oboe, groups, orchestras and choirs. His compositions included the Malta Suite, Maltese Dances, A Maltese Overture - Din l-Art Helwa, operas in Maltese, a ballet based on the Knights of Malta and the oratorio Pawlu ta' Malta. As far back as 1949, a concert consisting entirely of Camilleri's works took place in Malta. Camilleri's compositions for accordion include Magic Fingers, Accordiana, Evening in Paris, Accordion Samba, June, Australiana, Corinne and Concerto for Accordion and Strings.
Camilleri also worked in films. In 1957 he played the accordion in Seven Thunders, a war film starring Stephen Boyd, James Robertson Justice and Kathleen Harrison, and in 1987 he had an acting role as a musician in the film High Tide, starring Judy Davis. He also composed music for films.
In 1965, Camilleri organised the CIA Coupe Mondiale, held in the Maltese capital Valetta. 1972 Camilleri's contribution to the worldwide accordion movement was recognised with the CIA Merit Award.
Camilleri was widely recognized as one of the major composers and orchestral conductors of his generation. He moved on from the accordion world to establish himself in classical music, and is one of a very few accordionists to make an even greater name for himself in a wider musical context.
Charles Camilleri suffered a stroke a couple of years ago, and died on January 3rd 2009 at the age of 77. His funeral took place on January 5th at Naxxar, his town of residence for a long time. The number of people who attended the service, as well as the fact that flags across Malta were flown at half-mast on the date of his death, is evidence of the great impact he had on the people of Malta

The Crawley Accordion Orchestra - Newletter

 The Crawley Accordion Orchestra is looking for new band members! CRAWLEY ACCORDION ORCHESTRA 2008 has been one of the best years in recent times with performances being highly acclaimed. The year commenced with a concert at Cranleigh in the village hall a new venue for the Orchestra since the Arts Centre was no longer a viable place to perform. Through the summer months CAO played at three different bandstands and also at the Guildford Accordion Club. The autumn was the busy time that included three new venues. The highlight was performing at the Eastbourne music festival organised by John Romeo for three evenings. It was good to be with so many other accordionists and to receive such pleasant comments. The usual Cranleigh concert was well attended and it is good to have so many local people returning to hear us. Elmbridge village organised an event for the local community to whom we played our two hour program. As a new venue it was very pleasant at the end of the show for the organiser to say how much everyone had enjoyed it and they would want us back next year. Another successful new venture was playing at the Horley Theatre near Gatwick organised by Ruth Matthews. This was a new experience for CAO and we look forward to playing there again in the near future. The CRAWLEY ACCORDION ORCHESTRA now look to 2009 and the future. The orchestra has been awarded a grant to buy new music over a three year period. This is under way with 16 pieces just purchased, many from Germany. This will greatly enhance our already extensive repertoire. We are searching through catalogues with the involvement of all the orchestra to locate suitable music around grade 4 level that can readily be achieved to be played to appreciative audiences this year. However, we are now at a cross roads needing new members due to several players retiring or suffering with problems that are keeping them away. Bill and Ruth Booth who have given considerable time and effort over many years are leaving due to health problems. We are very grateful for the tremendous effort they have made especially Bill as Music Director enhancing our standard that is widely appreciated by so many and organising the successful Cranleigh Concerts. This year will see us developing brand new programs with the first performance due to be played at the Horsham Bandstand on the 27th June. Several other commitments have been made with the highlight this year being a trip to France to play with the French orchestra, Accordeon Club des Flandres, at their 20 year celebration together with the German Orchestra, Villakkordeon Hobby Orchestra of Wuppertal, in October. To meet our commitments we need new members now and would invite interested players to make contact. Practices are held every Thursday 7.45 pm at Ockham Village hall near Junction 10 on the M25. This is an orchestra with a good standard attracting players from as far away as Southampton and Orpington. |

 .Stockport Accordion Club’s first concert of 2009 takes place on Wednesday January 14th, with The Bon Accords, from Dumfries, Scotland, as our guest artistes. The Bon Accords are husband and wife Robin and Deryn Waitt, who play Shand Morino button accordion and piano accordion respectively. They are very experienced accordion entertainers, and well known around the Box & Fiddle clubs. The venue is Woodley Methodist Church, Chapel Street/A560 Hyde Road, Woodley, Stockport, Cheshire SK6 1ND (J25/M60). Admission is £5, and we begin at 8pm, and all are welcome – especially support players. .

Or simply listen to the extremely high standard of playing. During the week the foreign visitors will be taken sight seeing, and also be taken out at night (eg. ballet). I have now received some details which I am circulating to my accordion contacts.
It is to be called the Peter Paul Assembly of Accordionists (after Peter the Great's famous fortress in the River Neva opposite the Summer Palace). It will be a gigantic competition for all ages, which will include a Foreign Section (for foreign visitors). During the week the foreign visitors will be taken sight-seeing and will also be taken out at night (e.g. to the ballet).

I am not going to be able to attend as I am already committed to being away elsewhere for those dates, but I would be happy to pass on any tips I can to anyone who is thinking of going. Viv and I went to one of these festivals (possibly the first) in May 1994, and had a wonderful time. No doubt St Petersburg has changed a lot since then, and foreigners are much less of a novelty, but I'm sure the great tradition of Russian hospitality won't have changed. We were taken to the Hermitage, the Summer and Winter Palaces, the Peter Paul Fortress, and a much more special museum of historical beautifully decorated weapons; we heard Shostakovich's grandson conduct Shostakovich and we went to an incredible ballet performance - revival of Fokine's productions of Firebird, etc (and I'm not even a ballet person). We were lavishly entertained by an elderly gentleman who was a pupil of Russia's first bayanist (i.e. button- as opposed to piano- accordionist) and was living in extremely modest circumstances. In short, we were treated like royalty!
The great majority of the competitions were for players from the former Soviet bloc - and I presume that's what the "non-foreign" part of the competitions will be this time. I think I was the only player in the foreign section in 1994 - I must have played my Grade 5 pieces (which I'd just done), with my customary nerves, but was given an enthusiastic reception, certificate, medal etc!! There were, however, two foreign adjudicators, one from Barcelona, with whom we're still in regular touch. We also keep in touch with the interpreter who was assigned to us. She was a piano student at the St Petersburg Conservatory, who went on to study at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and married a Scottish violinist. The standard of the Russian players was, of course, fantastic, and Viv and I both enjoyed listening to some of the competitions. We only heard a small fraction of what was on offer and indeed we would have had to miss some of the sight-seeing programme to hear it all. The music was just part of an amazing experience. Lars Hollmer Passes Away

 Some sad holiday news to share: Swedish accordionist and Accordion Tribe member Lars Hollmer passed away on Christmas Day. I know he had been sick for some time; earlier this year, Seattle accordionist Amy Denio took Hollmer’s place on Accordion Tribe’s European tour.Known for his improvisational and avant-garde work on accordion and keyboards, Hollmer was part of the pioneering Swedish prog rock group Samla Mammas Manna (and its subsequent offshoots) and collaborated with numerous artists over the course of his 40 years in music. Most of his recordings were made at his unique home and studio outside Uppsala, Sweden, called “The Chickenhouse.” One of my favorite Hollmer songs is “Boeves Psalm,” written around 1977 and dedicated to an uncle of Hollmer’s who had just passed away.
