Introducing The Dee Gees Family Band.
Feb., 24, 2013
. are a family band - Mum, Dad, and two children. All the family members are musical and it was inevitable that one day they might play together. By chance, a local school needed some music at a summer fair, this gave the Dee Gees the final push to come together and make a band. They prepared a few pieces that they could play, and the event was a huge success! When they finally realised that their talents, when put together, made for a thrill ride of music, they started to practise and over time, became better and better. To this day, the Dee Gees still strive to be the best.
The band consists of family members:- Tracey - "The Mummy" Accordion & Caller. Gary - "The Daddy" Euphonium Iona - Accordion & Singer Bonnie - Accordion & Caller.
The Dee Gees provide an evening of entertainment for all ages. Dances start easy with circle dances, and through the evening include line formation and reels, as well as party games for young and old. The 'old' favourites include: Hokey Cokey, Birdie Song, Conga... wherever the evening takes them.

Club Accord - April Newsletter
Feb., 24, 2013
 Club Accord NewsletterApril 2012
I hope you all have a good break over Easter. Our next meeting is a club night on MONDAY 9th APRIL . The March meeting was a good one which marked St. Patrick’s Day with the third appearance at the club of Irish accordionist and singer DECLAN GAYNOR plus a special guest over from Ireland, JOHN McHUGH. Declan is a regular fixture on the Irish dance circuit who plays to hundreds at the Irish Centre in Digbeth. John is over from Ireland to tour maybe 20 times a year. They both had their own personal style and both were skilled musicians and singers who got our feet tapping and left me feeling inspired. While our guest artists set up, TONY TRENTHAM started off with some creative electronic sounds and a mellow but classy rendition of some great standards (I’m in the Mood for Love, Satin Doll, Smile, Margarete, Pigalle, September in the Rain and more). Tony didn’t let a bit of untimely competition from the soundcheck stand in the way of some quality music. JOHN SHELLEY keeps coming back with new tunes and debuted Unforgettable and Whistling Waltz, alongside Brin de Musette, Over the Waves and La Mattinata: nicely done. Then it was time for the guest artists. Declan Gaynor gave us a real quality performance. We knew what to expect: fast fingers, danceable keyboard backing, traditional Irish melodies with traditional Irish twists and turns (plus the Cuckoo Waltz), an easygoing stage presence and relaxed entertainment. For whatever reason, it worked particularly well in March and everybody seemed to be moving with the music at some point. We had medleys of hornpipes, jigs, reels, and old time waltzes with Declan finishing his first set by singing The Fields of Athen Rye. This was a highlight two years ago and went down just as well this year: he’s got a great voice. Declan then gave the floor to John McHugh while Declan backed him on keyboards – no prepared backing tracks while John was on, but the two held together just as well as if there had been. John’s style on the accordion was maybe a bit harder and faster, with even more runs and ornaments, maybe a less relaxed feel but just as entertaining. John gave us medleys of American tunes and hornpipes, picked up a lot of speed on The Rakes of Mallow and then instead of pausing for breath he launched into singing a very passionate version of Dublin City in the Rare Old Times which rounded off the first half brilliantly. In the break SIMON GARDNER showed how his playing is progressing: familiar tunes (Quattro Seviliano, Yuri, Is Moving), but the renditions were more powerful, more expressive, freer on the instrument. Keep watching this space. And then another member who knows more tunes than I’ve had hot dinners, NEIL LAUDER, decided to redress the balance and celebrate St David’s Day with Sospan Fach, Men of Harlech and The Ash Grove (beautiful tune), finishing movingly with Morte Criste. The guests were in a relaxed mood for the second half and really went for it with their performances. Declan began with polkas from County Kerry, jigs such as Dingle Regatta and the Seat of Ennis, hoe down numbers including Turkey in the Straw and Dixie and a set of rumbas (Save the Last Dance for Me, Spanish Eyes, finishing with Sally Garden in a set of reels. Even the rumbas had a definite Irish flavour and all the better for that. John Mc Hugh gave as good as he got with a lot of well known numbers including Tipperary, You are my Sunshine, the Irish Washerwoman, the Bluebell Polka. I saw John Shelley break into Irish dancing at one point. Declan finished with the Jacqueline Waltz as a tribute to Andy Banks and finally a set of reels including the Maid behind the Bar(but she had left the room by then). It was a very enjoyable evening that blended acoustic instruments, singing and electronic backing, entertainment-style performances and traditional music and created a real atmosphere with something for everyone. Now by EASTER MONDAY I’m sure everyone will be relaxed by the bank holidays. Never mind if you’ve got work the next day, come along to Catshill, bring your instruments and play, I’d like to hear it. We are hoping to add a couple of new ingredients into the club night and make some great music. I hope you can be there. New UK Teachers Association - First Meeting Report
Feb., 24, 2013
40 teachers attend the meeting to launch new Teachers Association On Sunday 13th January 40 teachers and several well-wishers packed the Henry Wood Room at the Royal Academy of Music in London in a serious attempt to form the first association for accordion teachers in the UK. They came from all over the UK, as far as Scotland in the north to the south coast and from Exeter in the west to East Anglia. The atmosphere was one of enthusiasm and positivity and much was achieved in discussing a constitution and a way forward. Already the meeting, which was chaired by Romano and Janet Viazzani, saw the eager new members working hard and five hours of debating were broken only for a tea and coffee break and a short musical interlude given by Bartosz Glowacki and Xian Gao, two of the students at the RAM, as a respite to the teachers debating and brainstorming. The minutes will soon be collated and it is hoped that the next meeting will be held in the next 6-7 months where an executive committee will be elected and a constitution signed. It is hoped that the association will enable teachers to refresh their skills through training programmes as well as provide a voice for teachers as a pressure group for achieving its goals in the wider musical spectrum. Here is a list of attendees and supporters who were unable to attend. Serbian born accordionist Miloš Milivojević is a first prizewinner at International Competitions in Germany, France, Italy and Denmark. In July 2007 he became the first accordionist ever to win the RAM Club Prize at the Royal Academy of Music.
After completing his studies in Kragujevac Music School with Vojin Vasovic, in 2002 he moved to London to study at the Royal Academy of Music with Owen Murray where he obtained the Postgraduate Diploma in July 2009 and was awarded with Dip RAM.
Miloš has performed in venues such as the Wigmore Hall, St John Smith Square, St Martin in the Fields and St James Piccadilly, University of London Senate House, Holywell Music Room, National Portrait Gallery Colston Hall Bristol, Keble College Oxford, and has performed at the Foundation Day awards ceremony in front of HRH The Princess Royal. Appearances at the festivals include: Park Lane Group Young Artists, Cheltenham International Festival of Music Aldeburgh Festival Britten-Pears Orchestra, Oxford Chamber Music Festival, Berio Festival, Northfolk & Norwich Festival, Deal and Chichester, Swaledale, Hexham, Belef, Nomus and Grad Teatar Festival.
He has premiered works by Anthony Gilbert, Howard Skempton, Elena Firsova, Stephane Altier, Patrick Nunn, Ben Foskett, Tom Lane, Elena Vorotko, Carlos Duque, Mark Bowden, Emily Hall, Chris Mayo, Anna Meredith, Philip Venables, and Robert Percy and has given the UK premiere of Sequenza No.13 by Luciano Berio. Miloš is also a keen chamber musician. He is a member of the London Tango quintet, Kosmos Ensemble and AccordDuo. He also gave live broadcasts on BBC Radio 3, Classic FM, ABC and Serbian National Radio and television network.
In March 2008, Miloš Milivojević was the Winner of the prestigious Derek Butler London Prize at the Wigmore Hall.
“Milivojevic’s artistry on the humble button accordion took the breath away - indeed, his coruscating transcription of an organ chorale by Mendelssohn made one almost wonder whether we actually need those thundering giants. I’d put money on this brilliant young performer opening a whole range of new musical worlds” Michael Church, The Independent, March 2008
In January 2010, he made his concerto debut at the St James Piccadilly playing Charles Camilleri Concerto for Accordion and Strings with Filarmonika orchestra, conducted by Brian Schembri.
Graeme studied piano at the Royal Academy of Music where he developed interests in chamber music, accompanying and teaching. He has broadcast many times and performed at the Bath and Harrogate Festivals, the Purcell Room and Wigmore Hall. Professor of Piano at the RAM since 1974, he maintains a substantial private teaching practice and is active in seminars for teachers in the UK and abroad.
