Twenty years ago, Jim Boggio and Clifton Buck-Kauffman had a crazy idea. What if they put on a music festival in the small Northern California town of Cotati? And what if it was centered around the accordion — which Boggio played — and incorporated a mix of musical styles like jazz, polka, Cajun, gypsy, etc. Would people be interested? Could they pull it off?

The answer is yes. Twenty times yes, in fact. This weekend, as they have for twenty years, accordion lovers from across the country and beyond will descend upon Cotati, CA, for the annual Cotati Accordion Festival. There will be two full days of accordion music, a tent dedicated to nonstop polka dancing, booths for accordion clubs and vendors, and, of course, the traditional Lady-of-Spain play-along accompanied by the release of white doves. Thousands attend every year and the non-profit festival raises important funds for local youth organizations.

Performers at this year’s festival include:

Dick ContinoFlaco JimenezLos TexmaniacsPolkacideThe Alex Meixner BandCulann’s HoundsTara Linda… and many more!

Anna and I have been attending for more than ten years and we’ll be there again this year. If you see us wandering around, be sure to say hi!

Busy time for accordionists in London
Aug., 3, 2010
Ksenija Sidorova
Hi Everyone

A busy time ahead for accordionists here in London. If you're in London next weekend don't miss these events:

Firstly Owen Murray's phenomenal accordion students from the Royal Academy of Music Ksenija Sidorova, Amadej Herzog, Trang Nguyen, Martynas Levickis and Rafal Luc who have had a cracking year will be playing at a lovely summer concert at Our Lady and St Thomas of Canterbury Church, 22 Roxborough Park, Harrow on the Hill, HA1 3BE.   It's at 7.30pm on Saturday 12th June 2010. Let me know if you want tickets (definites only please as I will have to purchase them for you).  They're £10 and include a Smoked Salmon supper and Strawberries and Cream.   The concert should end at around 9.30pm.  The bar is open from 7pm and for the supper.  You could always get these tickets from the parish office directly on 020 8869 6896.

The same night (12th June) sees excellent Brazilian Jazz accordionist Chico Chagas play with amazing pianist Simon Mulligan and Eduardo Mendonça - drums, Gili Lopes - bass and Special Guest - Caroline Sant’Anna - percussion.  Quite a few of us are already planning to go from Harrow straight after the Classical concert down to The Hideaway for some Jazz.  The set starts at 9.30pm or a little later so those who go to both may only catch the later set.  Definitely worth seeing though as Chico, Simon and the gang are jaw-droppingly amazing together. See link for details:

For those of you near Stroud, Mike Adcock and Pete Rosser are presenting an Accordion day on June 20th which includes concerts and workshops.  Click on the attachment above for info.

More news next week.

Accordion Jazz Weekend with Bert Santilly - Report
Aug., 3, 2010
Dear friends,We have just finished an excellent weekend of accordion jazz in the beautiful setting of Knuston Hall www.knustonhall.org.uk and have fixed the dates for next year as Friday 3rd June to Sunday 5th June 2011.  We would love to see you there, and I am writing to tell you that early bookings for this course are essential if you wish to have accommodation at Knuston Hall. They have a limited amount of excellent ensuite accommodation and, as we run parallel to other courses, there is a very high demand for this accommodation. This year some students were unable to get on the course as they left their bookings far too late and although B & B accommodation is available in the area, it is much nicer (and more relaxing) if you can remain on the premises for the whole weekend. Many people book for the following year as they leave and some of the accordion jazz weekend students have already done this. I shall be sending an account of this year`s course to the accordion magazines shortly so you will be able to see what we have been doing; but I will mention one new element which was a composition session, as this proved very popular with this year`s students.I really hope you will be able to join us in 2011 so, if you think you would like to come, please get your booking in early and a deposit paid so that you are guaranteed a place on the course with accommodation at Knuston Hall itself.I very much hope to see you there next year, in the meantime if there is anything you want to know about the course, please email me; I will be happy to answer any questions. With my very best wishesThis e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it Bert Santilly

The Members of the Black Country Accordion & Music Clubwere very sorry to hear the sad news of Neil passing away.We know his Accordion World will continue in his memory.Special thoughts from Barry Smith and Lou Ambrose.
************************************

Hi, Firstly, many thanks for all of your kind words following my father's passing. The funeral arrangements have now been confirmed and are as follows; Friday 7th May 2010 at 1.30pm Bretby Crematorium, Geary Lane, Bretby, Nr Burton upon Trent, Staffs, DE15 0QE and afterwards at Bretby Conference Centre, Ashby Road, Burton upon Trent, DE15 0YZ We have decided that the service should be a celebration of Dad's life and not a sombre affair and therefore, if you are able to come, please do not feel obliged to wear black if you do not wish to.  Dad was a staunch supporter of our Armed Forces, particularly in their current campaign in Iraq and Afghanistan and so, we are having flowers from the immediate family only and if you wish to, donations can be made to 'Help The Heroes' in Dad's memory. Please do not hesitate to give us a call if you wish to - obviously, the phone is pretty busy at the moment, but please keep trying! Kind Regards and thanks to you all Karina

Neil Fodden (1939-2010), Derbyshire – UKRob HowardNeil Fodden, the Editor of the magazine ‘Accordion World’ passed away from a massive stroke on Tuesday April 27th 2010.Born in the North East in 1939, Neil Fodden began playing the piano accordion aged 10, and was soon playing with local bands in pubs, clubs and dance halls. In those days the acoustic music scene was quite vibrant, as the word ‘disco’ had not yet been invented.Neil’s forte was playing for ballroom and sequence dancing, and he became one of the first exponents of the electronic accordion. He recorded two LPs of dance music, ‘Stepping Out’ and ‘Stepping Out 2’, under the pseudonym Alan Neil.In the late 1960s Neil’s work as an engineer took him to live in Zambia, where he played for dances from Lusaka up to Kitwe, and also provided accompaniment for visiting artistes. For five years Neil served as Secretary of the National Accordion Organisation, and more recently, since February 2008, as Editor of the magazine ‘Accordion World’, in succession to the late David Keen.Neil is survived by wife Kath and daughter Karina. Karina Fodden, an accordionist and competitor in many NAO competitions, will take over the production of ‘Accordion World’, which will continue as before. Neil will be missed by accordionists and friends throughout the UK.
