Hohner Gola Prototype on eBay
May, 31, 2007
For over fifty years, the Hohner Gola has been the top model in Hohner’s accordion line. The instrument is named for master accordion builder Giovanni Gola, who worked for Hohner from 1952 to 1972. You can’t just walk into a music store and buy a Gola, though — each instrument is hand-built and made to the specifications of its future owner.

If you can’t wait for Hohner to make you one, though, check out this auction for a one-of-a-kind “sub-octave” Hohner Gola prototype dating from 1953 (three years before the line was introduced). It comes with a letter of authenticity from the Hohner factory in Trossingen, Germany, as well as a handwritten note from Giovanni Gola himself describing the instrument. The asking price is a mere €50,000, or approximately $67,000. Cheap!

Maddalena Belfiore Passes Away
May, 24, 2007
A legendary performer, teacher, and champion of the accordion, Maddalena Belfiore-Greco passed away last Friday. She began playing the accordion at age five and went on to study with some of the greatest accordion teachers, including Sanford Hertz, Charles Nunzio, Eugene Ettore, and Pietro Frosini. She eventually attended Julliard and, at age 17, gave a recital at Carnegie Hall.Belfiore-Greco also authored several accordion technique books, including the Myron Floren Method books (in collaboration with Myron) and three seminal works on the bellows shake. In 1958, she opened the Belfiore Accordion School in her hometown of Kearny, NJ, and judged numerous international and national music competitions. In a recent interview, her advice to accordion students emphasized the importance of performing in public:“Listen to your teacher, and very important - practice! You have to have goals. Also, what happens today (different from when I studied) is that no one has a chance to play any place. I used to play at all these Clubs and Organizations, and that doesn’t happen so much any more I feel… We used to play any place we could. It was all part of the teaching and learning process. Kids going out to play publicly is probably the best lesson they could ever learn!”In 1971, after several years on the Board of Directors, Belfiore-Greco became the first female president of the American Accordionists’ Association. She was also a longtime officer in the prestigious Confdration Internationale des Accordonistes (CIA) and was instrumental in bringing the 2007 Couple Mondiale accordion competition to the United States. To learn more about Maddalena Belfiore-Greco’s life and impact on the accordion world, check out the thorough obituary at Accordion USA, as well as the fantastic interview mentioned above, which was conducted just last year. It includes some incredible old photos and news clippings of the extraordinary life of this accordion legend.
Accordion T-Shirt at Threadless
May, 23, 2007
Need some hip threads to wear to those summer accordion festivals we mentioned earlier? The folks at Threadless have answered the call with a quirky new shirt called Deer Organ (designed by Daniel Lim), which depicts a young accordionist serenading a couple of deer. (Seems like accordions and deer, or at least accordion-playing reindeer, are a popular T-shirt theme these days.)It’s definitely a conversation starter; and perhaps, finally a worthy replacement for that tattered “Myron Floren: 1982 World Tour” shirt you’re still wearing…
A Hawk, a Hacksaw and Hun Hangar
May, 23, 2007
We’ve mentioned A Hawk and a Hacksaw — the duo of accordionist/percussionist Jeremy Barnes (formerly of Neutral Milk Hotel) and violinist Heather Trost — here before. They play Eastern European-influenced gypsy/folk music and their latest album, When the Wind Blows was one of my favorites from last year.Last November, Barnes traveled to Budapest and met a group of extraordinarily talented Hungarian folk musicians well-versed in a variety of musical styles including Serbian, Romanian, and Klezmer. The result of their collaboration is a new EP called A Hawk and a Hacksaw and the Hun Hangr Ensemble. It’s a vibrant collection, balancing driving, dance-worthy tunes with electic instrumentation, including pheonomenal cymbalom playing by Balzs Unger. (The cymbalom is a type of hammered dulcimer.)The 8-song EP includes a bonus DVD with “An Introduction To A Hawk And A Hacksaw”, a documentary covering the band’s (practically) nonstop touring across Europe and the United States over the past two years. It’s also a limited edition run of 4,000, so grab it while you can, or pick up the digital version through iTunes.A Hawk and a Hacksaw and the Hun Hangr Ensemble: Zozobra (MP3 download)

Pearl Fawcett - Adriano is indeed thequintessential accordionist performer of her generation and appears to have it all,
she is a pleasant articulate attractive lady who makes each and every member of her audience feel special with her confident playing and winning smile.
She has bellow control and bass fingering to die for, her right hand touch and articulation are of the first order, her choice of musical programme content is always fresh interesting and varied, before performing each piece of music she explains in detail interesting facts about its history and that of the composer often with comments about the style of music or dance.
Pearl Fawcett-Adriano is, in my opinion, the best accordionist performer that we have right now in the UK and accordion students should make every effort to attend one of her superb performances. - Ron Bennett

USA TOUR
I’ll now be on tour for the remainder of May on a tour largely made up of Scottish folk clubs. Some of the best laughs I’ve had on tour have been playing in folk clubs and village halls so I’m really looking forward to this tour. Since many clubs struggle to host bigger band line ups both space wise and financially, Jamie and I will be doing this tour as a duo which is a relatively new venture for us but one we’ve been working on for a while alongside the band gigs.
Our tour begins though with a concert in Sanquhar Town Hall, Dumfries & Galloway where we will play as a three piece with new addition to the band Ross Milligan. This will be Ross’s first performance with me in my home region.
