NAO UK Championships 2008
Jun., 27, 2007

The NAO have announced that the 2008 UK Accordion Championships will be held on 25th - 27th April 2008 in Blackpool.

The competition will be held at the North Pier and Metropole Hotel and the event will feature concerts, workshops and the traditional Saurday night ceilidh with Gary Blair.

Full details can be viewed on the NAO website or by downloading the NAO Press release flyer.

The Galanti Super Dominator
Jun., 27, 2007
A few months ago, I wrote about a vintage Galanti accordion ad promoting their Super Dominator line of accordions. Recently, an Italian reader sent me a Galanti brochure from the same period (around 1950), as well as a photo of his own Super Dominator. According to the brochure:

“This sensitive musical instrument will outperform any other comparable accordion. It is the supreme achievement of the Galanti artisans… the culmination of a half-century of musical craftsmanship.”

The ads don’t lie — this was an excellent accordion and one of the world’s best during its time. (Thanks Alberto!)

Lil’ Nathan Grows Up
Jun., 27, 2007
It’s tough to follow in your father’s footsteps, but in the zydeco world, it’s practically a rite of passage. Zydeco is filled with families where the torch (or accordion) has been passed from father to son through the generations — families like the Ardoins, Broussards, Cheniers, and Delafoses, to name a few.

The Williams family is no different. Nathan Williams Jr. grew up in the shadow of his father, Nathan Sr., who leads Nathan and the Zydeco Cha-Chas. He started playing in his father’s band at age 5 and recorded his first album, Zydeco Ballin’ when he was just 14. Today, the 20-year-old junior at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette has a new album out, Doin’ It Big Time and appears poised to emerge from his father’s shadow. Those are big shoes to fill, but in a zydeco family, it’s just part of growing up.

Sammy Thomas Reaches the Top
Jun., 23, 2007
From the Top is a weekly radio show on NPR that showcases America’s top young classical musicians, aged 9 to 18. A couple weeks ago, the show featured 18-year-old U.S. National Accordion champion, Sammy Thomas. Classically trained since the age of ten, Sammy has played at many of the top accordion festivals (Cotati, Las Vegas) and is preparing to compete in this year’s Coupe Mondiale in Washington, DC.

You can listen to the ten-minute clip of Sammy’s appearance on the NPR website. It begins with a brief interview (his least favorite accordion genre: polka), followed by his excellent performance of “Chopin’s Nightmare”:

Mumlers Accordion Dog T-Shirt
Jun., 15, 2007
Accordions are clearly on the minds of hip t-shirt designers these days. One of my coworkers pointed me towards this unique accordion dog shirt ($16) for San Jose indie band, The Mumlers. In addition to peddling cute shirts, they play catchy, folky tunes on unlikely instruments such as the toy piano, stand-up bass, french horn and, of course, accordion.
Guy Klucevsek Ekes Out a Living
Jun., 14, 2007
There’s an interesting Wall Street Journal piece today on one of our favorite artists: composer/accordionist Guy Klucevsek. The profile covers his diverse career, including his compositions, soundtrack work, and involvement in Accordion Tribe. But it focuses on how difficult it is for even an accomplished player like Klucevsek to find steady, rewarding work, particularly in the United States:“During my 40s, I was starting to make a living… During my 50s, I was able to make one. Now I’m 60, and it’s borderline… I’m loath to complain… because I chose the path myself, and I knew what it was like when I chose it. I’m lucky I’ve been able to do it for this long.”Klucevsek, for instance, played in the orchestra pit for six performances of Kurt Weill’s “Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny” at last month’s Spoleto Festival in order to book a solo recital at the festival. (The Journal likened it to “paying Tiger Woods to compete in a miniature golf tournament.”) His American concert schedule is very light this year, but he will be performing this Sunday during the Accordionology festival at Barbes in Brooklyn, New York.

Dale Wise’s Accordions for Kids
Jun., 11, 2007
Last month, the Washington Post Magazine had a glowing feature on Virginia accordion teacher Dale Wise. Three years ago, Wise started Accordions for Kids, a program designed to introduce a younger generation to the accordion.Accordions for Kids is essentially a no-risk trial program for eight to twelve-year-old accordion students. Each student is loaned a 12-bass accordion and study materials (music stand, sheet music, etc.) and receives 10 weeks of lessons with a teacher free of charge. At the end of the program, the student performs in a recital and then decides (along with with his/her parents, of course) whether to continue. Children usually love it — and are oblivious to any stigma associated with accordion playing — but parents often need convincing:“There’s some selling that has to be done… But this accordion thing is going to happen, one way or the other. How big it becomes is just a matter of how much energy we got.”Accordions for Kids has been so successful that Wise has recruited teachers nationwide to participate. I absolutely love the idea and hope it continues to spread. Maybe one day we’ll have a nation of “accordion moms,” loading minivans full of accordions and shuttling them to lessons and recitals…

Pineto Jazz Accordion Festival – Italy
Jun., 9, 2007
The Pineto Jazz Accordion Festival, which takes place from July 20th to 22nd, seeks to encourage the spread of the jazz accordion. Performers include Renzo Ruggieri, Luciano Biondini, Renato Borghetti (Brazil), Sergio Caputo (USA), and the the Dixieland Brass Band, directed by Pine Mannello. Entrance to all concerts is entirely free.

The annual attendance has grown from 2,500 to 4,000, and accordionists featured in previous festivals include Peppino Principe, Art Van Damme, Frank Marocco, Germano Mazzocchetti and Renzo Ruggieri.
Pineto is a beautiful place on the italian sea and is near the Pescara airport.
Scottish Traditional Music Graded Exams - New financial support
Jun., 9, 2007
HRH is patron of the RSAMD – a position previously held by the Queen Mother
Summer is upon us, and with it a fresh update on the development of our Scottish Traditional Music Graded Exams.  I’m pleased to report that the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama recently gave added financial backing to the project, responding to demand across the education sector and showing faith in the exam programme’s power to promote inclusiveness, confidence and excellence among young traditional musicians everywhere.

Dear UKAO  The added support means that the programme can now achieve academic validation, develop its own website for booking and downloading purposes and implement exam sessions up to Grade 5 in three syllabuses – fiddle, accordion and harp.   This, of course, is just the beginning; we will continue to raise funds for the development of additional syllabuses and grades.  Work on the validation of the existing three syllabuses and the website has already begun.   We now plan to hold the first exam session during the RSAMD Fèis in Glasgow from 21 to 28 October 2007.  An official launch of the exam programme and the website , featuring full syllabus and registration details, will be announced in late July or early August.  Best wishesJosh Dickson - Project Manager Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama

Accordions for Kids!

Accordions for Kids - Click Here to read some of Betty Pollards excellent ideas ! I have been asked countless times for advice on how to start a childrens group so I have put the system we use at Tameside on the web.   It is a tried and trusted way of getting children playing quickly.   All the Bands we have trained at Tameside have all been introduced to ensemble playing using this method.   It is fun and easy to teach.Betty Pollard - Tameside Junior Accordion Band -UK
iTunes for Accordion?
Jun., 9, 2007
The beauty of online music services like iTunes is that they offer instant access to hard-to-find music. No waiting, no standing in line, no condescending looks from record store clerks when you’re picking up the latest polka CD (ahem)… just instant gratification for music lovers. But even iTunes’ vast catalog has some holes — particularly when it comes to solo and ensemble accordion music.Accordionist Lenny Feldmann (the “Cordeen Man”) is trying to fill those holes, though, with his own all-accordion online music service. Just like iTunes, you can listen to samples, buy entire albums or mix and match tracks at 99 cents a pop. There are currently over 200 tracks available, including selections by Frank Marocco, Zevy Zions, and the Accordion Pops Orchestra. It’s definitely worth checking out and, hopefully, the selection will continue to grow over time.

Tameside Junior Accordion Band - Winners!
I am delighted to report that the Band are the United Kingdom Preparatory Accordion Orchestra Champions. They won the title at the Nationals held in Scarborough on Saturday May 5th.
They won the Area Championship back in November which qualified them to represent the North West and they certainly didn't let our Area down.
Their ages range from 7 years to 15 and all live in the Tameside and Greater Manchester Area.
They have all worked incredibly hard to achieve this high standard, not only in practising and commitment, but fund raising to get the Band to the event. They have played  on the markets, in the parks and have bag packed at various venues and the public have been very generous in their donations so a big thank you to them and also to our local sponsor "Windmill Demolition Co Ltd" of Denton Tel. 0161 320 9119 who supplied a set of uniforms, Local people supporting local youth has paid off handsomely.

I founded the Band in 1992 with the aim of giving all children, especially those considered to be disadvantaged, an opportunity to learn music. We provide Instruments and Tuition free and 6 places are available for families wanting their children to take advantage of our musical scheme. For more info  tel. 0161 339 9250 new band web site  www.accordionsuk.com
Hope you have enjoyed our  story as our little band with their assortment of accordions have triumphed over the big guns from Scotland and the rest of the UK and have brought home the title.  A first for Tameside and the North West.
