iTunes for Accordion?
Jun., 9, 2007
The beauty of online music services like iTunes is that they offer instant access to hard-to-find music. No waiting, no standing in line, no condescending looks from record store clerks when you’re picking up the latest polka CD (ahem)… just instant gratification for music lovers. But even iTunes’ vast catalog has some holes — particularly when it comes to solo and ensemble accordion music.Accordionist Lenny Feldmann (the “Cordeen Man”) is trying to fill those holes, though, with his own all-accordion online music service. Just like iTunes, you can listen to samples, buy entire albums or mix and match tracks at 99 cents a pop. There are currently over 200 tracks available, including selections by Frank Marocco, Zevy Zions, and the Accordion Pops Orchestra. It’s definitely worth checking out and, hopefully, the selection will continue to grow over time.

Latest News from the Tameside Junior Accordion Band - June 2007
Jun., 6, 2007
Page 1 of 2 Tameside Junior Accordion Band - Winners! I am delighted to report that the Band are the United Kingdom Preparatory Accordion Orchestra Champions. They won the title at the Nationals held in Scarborough on Saturday May 5th. They won the Area Championship back in November which qualified them to represent the North West and they certainly didn't let our Area down. Their ages range from 7 years to 15 and all live in the Tameside and Greater Manchester Area.
They have all worked incredibly hard to achieve this high standard, not only in practising and commitment, but fund raising to get the Band to the event. They have played on the markets, in the parks and have bag packed at various venues and the public have been very generous in their donations so a big thank you to them and also to our local sponsor "Windmill Demolition Co Ltd" of Denton Tel. 0161 320 9119 who supplied a set of uniforms, Local people supporting local youth has paid off handsomely. Hohner Gola Prototype on eBay
May, 31, 2007
For over fifty years, the Hohner Gola has been the top model in Hohner’s accordion line. The instrument is named for master accordion builder Giovanni Gola, who worked for Hohner from 1952 to 1972. You can’t just walk into a music store and buy a Gola, though — each instrument is hand-built and made to the specifications of its future owner. If you can’t wait for Hohner to make you one, though, check out this auction for a one-of-a-kind “sub-octave” Hohner Gola prototype dating from 1953 (three years before the line was introduced). It comes with a letter of authenticity from the Hohner factory in Trossingen, Germany, as well as a handwritten note from Giovanni Gola himself describing the instrument. The asking price is a mere €50,000, or approximately $67,000. Cheap![Found via the Reyes Accordions forums]

Tom Russia with Love !
May, 28, 2007
UKAO catches up with 17 year old UK accordionist Thom Hardaker from North Yorkshire who has been invited to study the accordion at the St Petersburg Conservatory in Russia by the well respected Russian virtuoso accordionist Professor Oleg Sharov…Thom started off by learning playing the keyboard with a local music teacher called Harry Hinchcliffe who teaches keyboard, piano, guitar and accordion. Thom soon found his interests were with the piano accordion and started playing accordion at the age of 7. At the age of 11 by which time Thom had reached grade 5 Harry recommended that he change from a piano to a button accordion. Starting afresh and after 4 years of hard work and much practice Thom achieved grade 8 in his practical exam and grade 6 in theory and now regularly plays in local concerts and fundraising events both solo and with the Craven Accordion Orchestra and the Rob Thorn Band .In mid-november 2006 whilst playing with the Craven Accordion Orchestra in Giggleswick, North Yorkshire Thom met Professor Oleg Sharov – the main star of the event and prolific Russian virtuoso accordionist well known all around the world. Harry Hinchcliffe had organised with Professor Sharov beforehand for Thom to attend a Master Class with Professor Sharov to have a fresh set of eyes on his repertoire and for Professor Sharov’s valuable and well respected input. Thom had a challenging one hour which he enjoyed immensely having had an insight as to what study was like at the highest level and found he had gained a great deal from the master class, with Professor Sharov being extremely friendly and helpful. Following a brief discussion about Thom’s future career aspirations Professor Sharov suggested that he would like Thom to come study with him in St. Petersburg in the next year adding that he considered that Thom had the potential to become a professional performer. Thom passed his contact details to Professor Sharov and left it at that, six months later he received a phone call from Oleg asking "Is that Thom? - are you still interested in coming to study in Russia with me?" to which Thom without hesitation replied – “Yes please..” - an offer of a lifetime he couldn’t refuse! Thom intends to go to St. Petersburg in September 2007 for one years study initially on the conservatory’s preparatory programme; he will then have the option after this time to stay for another year or possibly 4 years – the four year course teaching up to doctorate level giving a D.M.A. qualification (Doctor of Musical Arts). Thom was excited to learn that he will be staying in a special accommodation block built for the conservatory students.Thom will be funding this study course by himself and is currently saving everything he can towards the costs of this exciting educational opportunity, if anybody would like to sponsor him (no matter how small the amount) they can contact Thom direct on Tel: 01535 - 632332 or write to him at:-Thom Hardaker - The Kings Arms, High Street, Sutton-in-Craven, North Yorkshire, BD20 7LPOr email Thom on:- This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it UKAO have set up an online donation fund for Thom called 'Tom Russia with Love Fund' where anyone can donate no matter how small an amount via Paypal and a safe secure connection.Richard Smith (UKAO) and Thom at Scarborough 07.

Maddalena Belfiore Passes Away
May, 24, 2007
A legendary performer, teacher, and champion of the accordion, Maddalena Belfiore-Greco passed away last Friday. She began playing the accordion at age five and went on to study with some of the greatest accordion teachers, including Sanford Hertz, Charles Nunzio, Eugene Ettore, and Pietro Frosini. She eventually attended Julliard and, at age 17, gave a recital at Carnegie Hall.Belfiore-Greco also authored several accordion technique books, including the Myron Floren Method books (in collaboration with Myron) and three seminal works on the bellows shake. In 1958, she opened the Belfiore Accordion School in her hometown of Kearny, NJ, and judged numerous international and national music competitions. In a recent interview, her advice to accordion students emphasized the importance of performing in public:“Listen to your teacher, and very important - practice! You have to have goals. Also, what happens today (different from when I studied) is that no one has a chance to play any place. I used to play at all these Clubs and Organizations, and that doesn’t happen so much any more I feel… We used to play any place we could. It was all part of the teaching and learning process. Kids going out to play publicly is probably the best lesson they could ever learn!”In 1971, after several years on the Board of Directors, Belfiore-Greco became the first female president of the American Accordionists’ Association. She was also a longtime officer in the prestigious Confdration Internationale des Accordonistes (CIA) and was instrumental in bringing the 2007 Couple Mondiale accordion competition to the United States. To learn more about Maddalena Belfiore-Greco’s life and impact on the accordion world, check out the thorough obituary at Accordion USA, as well as the fantastic interview mentioned above, which was conducted just last year. It includes some incredible old photos and news clippings of the extraordinary life of this accordion legend.

Accordion T-Shirt at Threadless
May, 23, 2007
Need some hip threads to wear to those summer accordion festivals we mentioned earlier? The folks at Threadless have answered the call with a quirky new shirt called Deer Organ (designed by Daniel Lim), which depicts a young accordionist serenading a couple of deer. (Seems like accordions and deer, or at least accordion-playing reindeer, are a popular T-shirt theme these days.)It’s definitely a conversation starter; and perhaps, finally a worthy replacement for that tattered “Myron Floren: 1982 World Tour” shirt you’re still wearing…

A Hawk, a Hacksaw and Hun Hangar
May, 23, 2007
We’ve mentioned A Hawk and a Hacksaw — the duo of accordionist/percussionist Jeremy Barnes (formerly of Neutral Milk Hotel) and violinist Heather Trost — here before. They play Eastern European-influenced gypsy/folk music and their latest album, When the Wind Blows was one of my favorites from last year.Last November, Barnes traveled to Budapest and met a group of extraordinarily talented Hungarian folk musicians well-versed in a variety of musical styles including Serbian, Romanian, and Klezmer. The result of their collaboration is a new EP called A Hawk and a Hacksaw and the Hun Hangr Ensemble. It’s a vibrant collection, balancing driving, dance-worthy tunes with electic instrumentation, including pheonomenal cymbalom playing by Balzs Unger. (The cymbalom is a type of hammered dulcimer.)The 8-song EP includes a bonus DVD with “An Introduction To A Hawk And A Hacksaw”, a documentary covering the band’s (practically) nonstop touring across Europe and the United States over the past two years. It’s also a limited edition run of 4,000, so grab it while you can, or pick up the digital version through iTunes.A Hawk and a Hacksaw and the Hun Hangr Ensemble: Zozobra (MP3 download)
