Return of the Gypsy Punks
Jul., 12, 2007
The best description I’ve read of Gogol Bordello is that they’re “a bit like The Clash having a fight with The Pogues in Eastern Europe.” Their new album, Super Taranta!, is out today and features an even wilder mix of accordion-driven gypsy, punk, reggae, ska, flamenco, and dub than their previous efforts. Frontman Eugene Hutz explains the inspiration behind the new album:

“Super Taranta! is our interpretation of tarantella, a ritual music from Italy… I saw a painting in Tuscany of a woman in convulsions and guy playing a violin. He’s leaning over her, playing music to cure her hysteria, put her into a trance and exorcize her demons. It was sexual, mystical and cultural, almost obscene — all the qualities of Gogol Bordello.”

Of course, Gogol Bordello’s reputation isn’t built on their recordings, but on their frenzied, sweaty live shows (which usually involve Eugene crowd-surfing on a bass drum). The band hits the East Coast later this week (check our calendar for dates) after making an impromptu appearance at last weekend’s Live Earth concert in London, adding some much-needed gypsy flair to Madonna’s set.

8th July - Accordion Stolen - London

ACCORDION STOLEN!!!

Ian Watson's Pigini Super-Sirius Bayan was stolen from the locked
boot of his car in South London on Sunday 8th July 2007.

  Please look out for it.
It is a unique instrument and very easy to identify.

Pigini (but the logo is covered up with tape to reduce its prominence
for TV work)

B-System  (converter bass, chin couplers)

Serial number 760 on the wood just under the grill and on the reed
blocks.

It is fitted with internal mics, two volume controllers on the treble side.

For all lovers of fine instruments, this is a real tragedy.

Hi Guys,

My accordion has been stolen from my car. I'm trying to circulate the description to as many musicians as possible in the hope that somebody might hear something. If you see someone with a big brown case on their back - let me know!

I know it's a very remote chance but I'm trying everything possible.

If you could circulate this further I would be really grateful. It's absolutely heartbreaking. It's the first time I've ever left it in the car and this happens - don't ever be tempted to do it....

All best,

Ian Watson - Monday 9th July 2007

Elly Kelly’s Acadian Dance Party
Jul., 10, 2007
Born into an Acadian family in St. Charles, New Brunswick, Elly Kelly started playing accordion at the age of 13 and was soon joining her mother, father, and brother onstage at square dances, jamborees and talent shows. After taking time off to raise three children, Elly has returned to music with a lively album of reels and waltzes called Yesterday’s Dream.

The album opens with a nod to her musical roots — a high-spirited clip recorded by her parents at her childhood home more than 25 years ago. From there, it’s nothing but foot-stompin’, feel-good music buoyed by Elly’s passionate accordion playing and complemented by June Eikhard’s fiddle work. This is a perfect summer evening party-on-the-porch record; the kind of down-home, old-time party music you enjoy while laughing and relaxing with friends.

Elly doesn’t currently have a website, but if you want to learn more or order her CD, you can email her at ellykellymusic at gmail.com.

International adjudicator - John Leslie
Sevenoaks Music Festival On Saturday 23rd June 2007 the accordion section of the Sevenoaks Music Festival commenced at 9.30 a.m. with John Leslie adjudicating 15 sections. The first section of the day was the beginners class, and the first competitor to play was Laura Harding from Horsham. Mary Knight, (from Worthing) won the Grade 3 - 4 section, playing the Tarantella Boogie, by John Leslie. Natalie Gillbanks from Surbiton, played  "Kopukkaa" which is a traditional Finnish folk song, arranged for accordion by Matti Rantonen. The Sevenoaks Festival has a very forward looking section to encourage musicians to compose for the accordion, there were two sections in this category, class 731 - composition for "solo accordion" and class 722 - composition for "two accordions" (Duet) Both sections were awarded to Rene Mairis, (from the Isle of Wight) this budding composer received extremely high praise from Mr. Leslie, both for musical content and correctness of scoring, Mr. Leslie added that he highly recommends that teachers use the two Rene Mairis compositions, "Place du Terte" an extremely pleasant grade 3 musette style solo, and "The Inca Trail" a very descriptive duet, also grade 3, in the progress of their students education. These excellent Rene Mairis accordion pieces will soon be available from UKAO  www.ukaccordions.com
Melanie Wright, playing "Rivalite" by Colombo, won the "Open Musette Class."   First place in the "Open Duet" was awarded to Melanie Wright and Richard Cotmore, playing the difficult arrangement by Romani, of the Grieg "Anitras Dance" Honey and Graham Lovell (from Christchurch), came a close second in the "Open Duet" playing an arrangement of Moulin Rouge, by John Leslie. The "Open Own Choice Solo" section was won by Alistair Williams playing the "Spanish Gipsy Dance" by Marquina, he was awarded a distinction, with an extremely high Mark of 90.The final section of the day was class 730 - Senior Orchestra, The Banstead Accordion Orchestra, conducted by Judy Brown, played Pizzicato Polka by J Strauss, followed by Sand Dance from Mediterranean suite arranged by Farran, The adjudicator (John Leslie) was full of praise for the conductor, Judy Brown, he complemented her on her style and clear instructions, however he did advise that she should take some members to task for not following her instructions more closely, and advised the orchestra members  that showing a conductor only the top of the head, was daunting for any conductor. John Leslie has a wonderful style of adjudicating in which he makes the competitors feel completely at ease. He gave a brief critique to each competitor after their performance including   a demonstration of how to bend a note. Competitors and audience alike found his comments extremely constructive and interesting. One member of the audience was heard to say "This is fantastic - it's just like having a free lesson "to which the fun reply from the competitor was "yes-at my expense!"The atmosphere was very pleasant and friendly and even the non accordionists were won over. There were several pianists, who after playing in their competitions had stumbled across the accordion section. They enjoyed it so much that they stayed for the whole thing  with some even purchasing some accordion music! The highest mark of the day was awarded to Stephen Best for his fantastic performance of  "The Hundred Acre Wood by Rene Mairis".  Stephen's portrayal, both playing and narrative in this piece had everybody (including the adjudicator and his clerk Chris) absolutely spellbound. THE ACCORDION WORLD MAGAZINE CHALLENGE TROPHY,which is awarded annually at the Sevenoaks Music Festival for the most outstanding performance of the day, was returned by last year's winner Mary Knight and will be presented to Stephen at the prize giving concert (date to be announced ) giving him another opportunity to play this beautiful piece. Thanks must go to Margaret Holgate and her organising committee and helpers at Sevenoaks, who ensured that everything ran so smoothly at the festival. This year's festival was well attended and it was especially refreshing to see such notable teachers either there in person or represented by their students, teachers of note such as Chris Carrington, Sheila Cooper, Sue Bennett, Julie North and Brenda Thompson .  Report by Neil Lane   Regarding the prize winners concert for the Sevenoaks Music Festival, it will be held in the theatre at the venue where the competition was held and will commence at 7-00 pm on Saturday 30th June 2007. Representing the accordion section will be Stephen Best, he will be playing and narrating the piece with which he won the entertainment section last Saturday. The piece is called “The 100 Acre Wood”  by Rene Mairis, and it is about Winnie the Poo,  and for which he was awarded 92 marks, this was the highest mark of the day, so Stephen will be awarded the Accordion World Trophy, donated by Mr. David Keen, from Uxbridge.
Other winners of various instrumental, dance and voice sections, will also be performing, so it should be a very interesting evening.- ------------------ Neil Lane

We were playing outside, which of course presents
it's own difficulties but thankfully the weather held
out and our performance was well received - Shona

Rett Syndrome News:
There has been major advances in the research of Rett Syndrome,
you may have seen the press coverage on the BBC National News earlier in the year.
To cut a long story short they have found a way to switch back on the defective
gene that causes Rett Syndrome.  In Rett Syndrome mice this was done and
within two weeks the mice were back to normal.
They are now looking to do research on animals who's brain is similar to the
human brain to find a way of delivering this therapy to humans with Rett's.
