Accordionist wins major competition
Jul., 18, 2007

Milos Milivojevic won the prestigious Royal Academy of Music Club Prize. The final round was held in the Academy’s Duke’s Hall on 21st June. The 4 finalist were Mariangela Vacatello, piano. David Butt Philip, baritone. Maria Oldak, violin. Milos Milivojevic, accordion.

The distinguished jury consisted of Professor Jonathan Freeman-Attwood, Vice Principal of the RAM. Dame Felicity Lott, Professor George Caird, Principal of the Birmingham Conservatoire, violinist Clio Gould and pianist  Leslie Howard.

In his summing up Professor Jonathan Freeman-Attwood, chairman of the jury, said;” we wave been teaching the accordion here for the past 20 years and in that time we have become used to very high standards of performance. Tonight was no exception. This was playing of the highest level, we loved it. You brought something new to Scarlatti and Mendelssohn and  Lindeberg’s Jeux d’anche was brilliant”.  Milos was given a standing ovation at the presentation award.

The prize consists of a full evening recital at the RAM in January 2008 plus £1.000.

Milos’ success in this competition and past successes in the Park Lane contemporary music series (Purcell Room) and Wigmore Award, further underlines the integration and acceptance of the accordion at the highest level and I hope it will encourage young accordionists in the UK to seek to follow his example. The new government accredited Trinity/Guildhall Examination Board grade accordion syllabus paves the way for the development of the accordion in schools throughout the UK. It is a professionally compiled syllabus that provides a framework for musical and technical development for students, and teachers. Standards need to be raised in the UK and this can go a long way to achieving that. The accordion will now be examined by the same criteria applied to all other instruments. We now have equality and I hope this will bring to a swift end the segregation that has stood in the way of the instruments development in the UK for so many years. I believe in the power of collective energy and I hope we can all pull together – preferably in the same direction, to ensure that we have an accordion development in the UK that we can be proud of and one admired and respected within the international accordion community.

Daniel Binelli, Tango Master
Jul., 18, 2007
One of my coworkers caught the San Francisco Symphony’s free concert in Dolores Park on Sunday, which featured bandonen virtuoso Daniel Binelli. Binelli is a seasoned tango veteran, having been a member of both Osvaldo Pugliese’s orchestra and Astor Piazzolla’s New Tango Sextet, touring extensively with the latter until Piazzolla’s death.

Today, Binelli often performs with symphonies, his own quintet, and as part of a duo with Uruguayan pianist Polly Ferman. A longtime friend of Piazzolla’s, Binelli is considered one of the primary torchbearers of the tango nuevo master’s musical legacy. Here’s a clip of Binelli interpreting Piazzolla’s classic “Adios Nonino”:

Return of the Gypsy Punks
Jul., 12, 2007
The best description I’ve read of Gogol Bordello is that they’re “a bit like The Clash having a fight with The Pogues in Eastern Europe.” Their new album, Super Taranta!, is out today and features an even wilder mix of accordion-driven gypsy, punk, reggae, ska, flamenco, and dub than their previous efforts. Frontman Eugene Hutz explains the inspiration behind the new album:“Super Taranta! is our interpretation of tarantella, a ritual music from Italy… I saw a painting in Tuscany of a woman in convulsions and guy playing a violin. He’s leaning over her, playing music to cure her hysteria, put her into a trance and exorcize her demons. It was sexual, mystical and cultural, almost obscene — all the qualities of Gogol Bordello.”Of course, Gogol Bordello’s reputation isn’t built on their recordings, but on their frenzied, sweaty live shows (which usually involve Eugene crowd-surfing on a bass drum). The band hits the East Coast later this week (check our calendar for dates) after making an impromptu appearance at last weekend’s Live Earth concert in London, adding some much-needed gypsy flair to Madonna’s set.Buy Super Taranta! by Gogol Bordello (Amazon)Gogol Bordello: Super Theory of Super Everything (MP3 download)
8th July - Accordion Stolen - London

ACCORDION STOLEN!!!Ian Watson's Pigini Super-Sirius Bayan was stolen from the locked
boot of his car in South London on Sunday 8th July 2007.  Please look out for it.
It is a unique instrument and very easy to identify.

Pigini (but the logo is covered up with tape to reduce its prominence
for TV work)

B-System  (converter bass, chin couplers)

Serial number 760 on the wood just under the grill and on the reed
blocks.

It is fitted with internal mics, two volume controllers on the treble side.

For all lovers of fine instruments, this is a real tragedy.

Hi Guys,

My accordion has been stolen from my car. I'm trying to circulate the description to as many musicians as possible in the hope that somebody might hear something. If you see someone with a big brown case on their back - let me know! I know it's a very remote chance but I'm trying everything possible.

If you could circulate this further I would be really grateful. It's absolutely heartbreaking. It's the first time I've ever left it in the car and this happens - don't ever be tempted to do it....

All best,

Elly Kelly’s Acadian Dance Party
Jul., 10, 2007
Born into an Acadian family in St. Charles, New Brunswick, Elly Kelly started playing accordion at the age of 13 and was soon joining her mother, father, and brother onstage at square dances, jamborees and talent shows. After taking time off to raise three children, Elly has returned to music with a lively album of reels and waltzes called Yesterday’s Dream. The album opens with a nod to her musical roots — a high-spirited clip recorded by her parents at her childhood home more than 25 years ago. From there, it’s nothing but foot-stompin’, feel-good music buoyed by Elly’s passionate accordion playing and complemented by June Eikhard’s fiddle work. This is a perfect summer evening party-on-the-porch record; the kind of down-home, old-time party music you enjoy while laughing and relaxing with friends.Elly doesn’t currently have a website, but if you want to learn more or order her CD, you can email her at ellykellymusic at gmail.com.Elly Kelly: St. Ann’s Reel (MP3 download)

Mmm… Songs for Ice Cream Trucks
Jul., 9, 2007
As the dog days of summer take hold, who can resist the siren call of the ice cream truck? I sure can’t; the stacks of Choco Tacos in my freezer are proof.Gothamist today has a fun interview with Michael Hearst, who loves ice cream but grew tired of hearing trucks play the same old songs summer after summer. So he sat down and created an entire album of new music for ice cream trucks, appropriately titled Songs for Ice Cream Trucks, with song titles like “The Popsicle Parade”, “Tones for Cones”, and my favorite, “Chocolate, Vanilla or Swirl?”As with his work in One Ring Zero, Hearst uses a variety of eclectic instruments — including accordion, melodica, claviola, glockenspiel, and theremin — to evoke memories of childhood summers, but without the tinny, repetitive renditions of “Pop Goes the Weasel.” The album was featured on a Today Show segment and more than fifty trucks nationwide are now playing his music. The track linked below is one of the album’s more melancholy tunes: a rumination on where ice cream trucks go during the winter.Buy Songs for Ice Cream Trucks by Michael Hearst (Amazon)Michael Hearst: Where Do Ice Cream Trucks Go In the Winter? Gary Blair & Gary Blair - USA Tour Report!
Jul., 6, 2007
 - My journey started with Vegas. My son and I arrived in Vegas on Friday 15th June. Once again  my Accordion went missing !!  I phoned Continental airlines every couple of hours (1/2 hour to get thru each time) to be greeted with " we are trying to locate your baggage" - 3 days later,it turned up in good condition.
The Vegas festival was a blast!
Every evening at 5, Steve and Mike Trucco had a cocktail party in their suite. Art van Damme, Dick Contino, Tony Lovello etc were also there. I was really excited to meet Carl Fortina for the first time (he of godfather theme fame) and found him to be a very warm and lovely person.  Peter Soave was first on the bill on the Monday night, but due to a sticky bass button, he asked if I would swop places. I gladly changed places with him and found the audience very receptive and warm.
Nightly , we had a blast after hours in the "Concerto room", inviting the audience members to come up and play.
The workshops were extremely well attended and many people asked questions relating to all things accordion.  I particularly enjoyed the company of Walter Ostanek and his band who were great fun. My son and I also enjoyed the company of Rene de La Prad from San Francisco. She is a live wire!!
My son Gary (15) was invited to perform a few tunes at the Thursday lunch concert and received a standing ovation)
We had to leave Vegas on Thursday night at 12 midnight and fly to Seattle. We were picked up ( at 2.45am) by my dear friends from Portland , Geoff and Joyce levear and arrived in Leavenworth at 5.45am. I started judging the competitions at 9 am and held 2 workshops ( 12 am and 6pm)   The standard this year was quite superb!
Many of the big names competed, Sheila miller Bower, Patricia Bartell,Diane Hagen,Chelsey Mayes ( New Zealand) and many others.
What I liked most of all about the comps, was the atmosphere and camaraderie between competitors. They all treated each other as good friends.  A special mention has to go to 14 Michael Bridge from Calgary, who won 7 or 8  first places and 2nd in the Leavenworth open. This lad is something very special indeed!
Not one to miss a jam session, my son and I joined many other players in Andreas Keller for a great party atmosphere (videos on you tube to follow) every night.
We then headed for a couple of days in Portland , Oregon and were pleased to be invited to a hastily arranged dinner/party where 25 accordion enthusiasts got together for 2 anniversaries, Chuck Berger's Birthday and a going away party for my son and I.
We had the most wonderful time in the USA and found everyone to be simply divine. America is a superb country as are its people.
We arrived back in Glasgow just 24 hours before the terrorist attack on the Airport. A close call.
Will definitely be back next year and hope to extend the tour to take in more cities.
Anyone interested can see the photos at
