Accordionist wins major competition
Jul., 18, 2007
Milos Milivojevic won the prestigious Royal Academy of Music Club Prize. The final round was held in the Academy’s Duke’s Hall on 21st June. The 4 finalist were Mariangela Vacatello, piano. David Butt Philip, baritone. Maria Oldak, violin. Milos Milivojevic, accordion. The distinguished jury consisted of Professor Jonathan Freeman-Attwood, Vice Principal of the RAM. Dame Felicity Lott, Professor George Caird, Principal of the Birmingham Conservatoire, violinist Clio Gould and pianist  Leslie Howard. In his summing up Professor Jonathan Freeman-Attwood, chairman of the jury, said;” we wave been teaching the accordion here for the past 20 years and in that time we have become used to very high standards of performance. Tonight was no exception. This was playing of the highest level, we loved it. You brought something new to Scarlatti and Mendelssohn and  Lindeberg’s Jeux d’anche was brilliant”.  Milos was given a standing ovation at the presentation award. The prize consists of a full evening recital at the RAM in January 2008 plus £1.000. Milos’ success in this competition and past successes in the Park Lane contemporary music series (Purcell Room) and Wigmore Award, further underlines the integration and acceptance of the accordion at the highest level and I hope it will encourage young accordionists in the UK to seek to follow his example. The new government accredited Trinity/Guildhall Examination Board grade accordion syllabus paves the way for the development of the accordion in schools throughout the UK. It is a professionally compiled syllabus that provides a framework for musical and technical development for students, and teachers. Standards need to be raised in the UK and this can go a long way to achieving that. The accordion will now be examined by the same criteria applied to all other instruments. We now have equality and I hope this will bring to a swift end the segregation that has stood in the way of the instruments development in the UK for so many years. I believe in the power of collective energy and I hope we can all pull together – preferably in the same direction, to ensure that we have an accordion development in the UK that we can be proud of and one admired and respected within the international accordion community. Owen Murray
Daniel Binelli, Tango Master
Jul., 18, 2007
One of my coworkers caught the San Francisco Symphony’s free concert in Dolores Park on Sunday, which featured bandonen virtuoso Daniel Binelli. Binelli is a seasoned tango veteran, having been a member of both Osvaldo Pugliese’s orchestra and Astor Piazzolla’s New Tango Sextet, touring extensively with the latter until Piazzolla’s death.Today, Binelli often performs with symphonies, his own quintet, and as part of a duo with Uruguayan pianist Polly Ferman. A longtime friend of Piazzolla’s, Binelli is considered one of the primary torchbearers of the tango nuevo master’s musical legacy. Here’s a clip of Binelli interpreting Piazzolla’s classic “Adios Nonino”:Daniel Binelli: Adios Nonino (MP3 sample)
San Jose Gathering - 14 Jul 07
Jul., 18, 2007
Well, we had a small showing at the gathering this month in San Jose, but personally, I think it was one of the most productive in the way of learning. We had the opportunity to breakout in small groups and learn from each other. The weather was a little warm, but it was a beautiful day. Here are a few pictures I took...

I thought for sure I had taken a picture of Armando (Alacran), but I must have missed him! Anyway, he was there too.

The prize for the UK final is £1000 worth of Roland Equipment and the European final is Euros 5000.  All you need to do is film yourselves playing a short programme of 5 minutes and send it in to Roland.    You can enter on your own accordion for the video but must play a Roland V-Accordion in the finals which you will be able to borrow from Roland two weeks prior to the final if you do not own one already.  The competition is open to soloists or ensembles of up to 4 people.  The rules and regulations are all on the website.  I really hope you all decide to enter.  It will be great fun, the prizes are great and if it is a success it may become a regular thing on the accordion calender of events so please give it your full support.  Teachers if you have any star pupils please put them forward for this it will be good experience and a chance to play in the international final in Italy.

All the best - Romano Viazzani
