Accordions at Morley-Update!
Aug., 8, 2007

Dear UKAO, Just to remind all of you who are within range of Morley College  London that
we are giving a free lunchtime concert tomorrow 3rd July 2007 (1.05 - 1.55 p.m.).
The opportunity to hear our ensemble, smaller groups, and the
incomparable Duo Esprit (Ian Watson and Julie North).
Hope to see you on the 3rd!

Please note:Neither Ian nor Julie can now manage to be with us on 13 July.  (I
shall also be away, at St Audries Bay.)  We have therefore decided to
cancel the meeting planned for that day.  People who have paid for
the term will get a corresponding reduction for the first term next
year. The meeting THIS COMING FRIDAY, 6th July, will therefore be our last
of this Academic Year.  Hope to see lots of you then - particularly
those who are going to Clacton. Thanks to all who played in and came to today's lunchtime concert.  I
thought it went well, and our audience certainly seemed to enjoy it.
All the best - Neil Sanders

Checking In at the Wilber Czech Festival
Aug., 8, 2007
Despite our best efforts to stay on top of all accordion-related festivals, one occasionally slips in under the radar. Fortunately, the Lincoln Journal Star has an excellent recap of last weekend’s Wilber Czech Festival in tiny Wilber, Nebraska (”Czech Capital of the USA”).

The 46th annual festival drew close to 45,000 people (to a town of only 1,700) for a weekend of Czech food (mmm… kolaches), polka music and dancing, and an accordion jamboree. Check out the accompanying audio slideshow to hear Charlie Keller, president of the Nebraska Czechs of Wilber, talk about the culture of the Wilber Czech Festival.

They Might Be Giants: The Else
Aug., 4, 2007
Just a couple weeks ago, They Might Be Giants released their new album The Else bundled with a super special bonus disc called Cast your Pod to the Wind, which contains music previously released only on their podcasts. It’s no doubt They Might Be Giants is one of the hardest working (and prolific) rock bands out there; releasing the equivalent of two albums at the same time is an impressive feat!

I love both of these discs. Yes, I am a long time fan, but every song included is quintessentially They Might Be Giants. From Flansburgh’s energetic power-pop guitar hooks to Linnell’s cleverly written lyrics and meticulously orchestrated geek-rock, both discs are a fabulous collection of musical experiments. I’ve listened to it about 20 times over, and yet I continue to get “Aha!” moments when I catch a lyrical phrase with a double meaning or a clever melodic riff. I can’t help but think “These guys are geniuses!”

Although light on accordion solos, I think any musician would appreciate the vast array of other instruments and effects used to enhance this otherwise straight-forward rock album and bonus disc. It’s a must for dedicated fans, and a great ’starter’ album for people less familiar with the band.

The group's latest CD is titled "Paloma Querida," cuts from which can be heard on KEDA-AM.

Los Hermanos DeLeon are known for their vocal harmonies and are part of San Antonio's rich musical heritage. The conjunto, which plays a mix of traditional and progressive styles, has been playing as a group for 14 years. But according to Ernest, their father, Juan and uncle Jesse, were playing as Los Bienvenidos de Los Hermanos DeLeon since the early 1960s.

Pulaski Polka Days Wrapup
Jul., 25, 2007
Sounds like last weekend’s Pulaski Polka Days, where “polka rhythm filled the air and infiltrated people’s bones,” was a rousing success. According to the Green Bay Press-Gazette’s recap, there was a lively turnout — young and old alike — for the 29th edition of one of the nation’s biggest polka festivals:“If you think polka music is uncool or only for the elderly, talk to Eric Niziolek, 25, and his buddies, who have been coming to the event from their homes near Wausau every year for about the last five years. ‘Good music, good people, girls and beer,’ said Niziolek when asked what kept him coming back.”I also found a Flickr photoset that captures the festival parade, as well as some of the bands, including the shot below — appropriately titled “Only in Wisconsin.”Pulaski Polka Days 2007, uploaded by The Dana Files
Olive Blossoms
Jul., 23, 2007
Greetings UKAO:

I have recently released an album of accordion solos.  The objective of this CD is to promote the accordion as a unique solo instrument and to demonstrate what the instrument can do, provided the hours are put in to achieve that goal.
The CD is titled: "Olive Blossoms", which is arguably one of the prettiest tunes ever written for the instrument.
Please read about it by clicking on the following links:

‘La Petit Robinson’ Closes, Paris - France
Jul., 21, 2007
The oldest guinguette in Paris, ‘La Petit Robinson’, has been sold. Ginguettes are known as meeting places in France, where all most well known of the accordion artistes have were performed during the 20th Century, such as Yvette Horner, André Verchuren...and many others. Right is a picture of Jean-Louis Noton and a friend about to enjoy.

The guingettes were places for workers coming together, having fun with their accordions and, drinking a glass of wine. Philippe Blanchi, the former owner has decided to go and live in Quebec, where he bought wine bar.

Before his departure he invited his friends to his house in the Normandie to empty his wine cellar. Further on the menu: lobster, foie grass and smoked salmon, accompanied by the best French wine.
