Emily Smith - News!
Sep., 29, 2007
After months of me talking about making a new album I am very happy to announce that the recording is now complete.  I’ve been juggling touring and recording on and off since the beginning of the year which is why it has taken a fair bit of time to get it done.  The album was produced by me and Jamie (McClennan) and although it was a lot of hard work and tiring on the ears - we’re really happy with the result. The material is again a mix of my own songs and traditional material with a few crossovers in there too.  I’ve named the album Too Long Away which is a line from one of the songs.  For me it sums up how I have felt over the past year since moving back to the area I grew up in and realising that this is where I feel most at home.
Hopefully you’re now feeling as excited about the new album as I am!  There’s just one thing – you’re going to have to wait just a few more months (well about 4 to be exact...) until you can get your hands on a copy.  I had planned to release the album this year but have now decided to license the album to another label so that I can concentrate more on being a musician and less on running a record label.  So, I hope you’ll bear with me for now.  There are lots of things going on behind the scenes right now so I should have more details for you next time.I’ve mainly been playing festivals at weekends over the summer months which has been great fun.  I’ve been playing with a four piece band and it’s been great to get the new material out there and play it live after lots of studio time.  Despite the wash out of a summer, we’ve been blessed with sunshine at the festivals – Sidmouth and our wee trip to Iona was especially lovely.  There are a few festivals remaining so if you want to come and hear some of the new material then check out the gigs listed below.  If you’re not into the festival vibe then I’ll be playing a few dates in England during September, again with the full band.

Eastbourne Accordion Festival 2006
Sep., 29, 2007

Pictured above at John & Jackie Romero's extremely successful Eastbourne Accordion Festival are Romeo Aichino, Lisa-Lee Leslie, Ron Bennett, Gary Blair & Sue Bennett.

The event took place at the Cumberland Hotel in Eastbourne, East Sussex (Frid. 17th - Mon. 20th Feb. 2006). A happy atmosphere prevailed throughout this well supported Accordion Weekend event on the south coast.

The event sold out in advance and was a credit to the many months of hard work and preparation by John & Jackie Romero (Carillon Studios), their expertise in organising organ and keyboard festivals was apparent throughout this magical weekend dedicated to the accordion.

Credit must also go to the many performers, teachers & traders who were in attendance.
The event ran like clockwork from start to finish, there was always plenty going on, the food was delicious and well presented, the hotel staff were friendly and helpful, the rooms were cosy and nicely decorated but above all  "Accordion Camaraderie & Fun" were the weekend theme.

Little touches from John & Jackie made the difference here, for instance a personalised welcome pack for everyone on arrival including a detailed programme of events, a free chocolate bar and a magazine. Also included were complimentary afternoon tea, coffee biscuits & cakes served in the comfort of the ballroom daily at 4pm with musical accompaniment provided by George Bennett (Yamaha Tyros)  and Harry Hussey (Borsini Special).

These personal touches made the festival that much more enjoyable and relaxed, however 10 hours of seminars & tuition were still slotted into the weekend schedule of events (covering all standards from beginners, advanced to jazz) and in the evening's over 12 hours of concerts were included in the ballroom, even a Gary Blair Ceilidh was enjoyed by all on the saturday night as the chairs were quickly pushed aside to accommodate the many dancers and to test the sprung dance floor, it reminded me very much of the fabulous wild saturday evening Ceilidhs Gary has provided for decades at Scarborough.

Eastbourne Artists included: Charlie Watkins - Gary Blair - Gennaro Fiondella - Harry Hussey - John Leslie - Lisa-Lee Leslie -Romeo Aichino - John Romero - Trevani & George Bennett with a guest appearance by Alan Young Teachers at the festival were Sue Bennett - Gary Blair - Gennaro Fiondella - Harry Hussey - John Leslie & Trevani. Organisations and Traders were represented by: Accordions of London - W.E.M. -Trevani Studios - Stan Mayhew - Cooperativa - Carillon Studios - UKAO - Roland UK - The Accordion Shop Sunningdale (Chris Lovell).

The Polish Diva’s Polka Party
Sep., 29, 2007
Terry Palasz isn’t your average polka singer. Classically trained with a powerful soprano, she puts a unique twist on traditional polka music with her album, The Polish Diva’s Polka Party. The album grew out of her one-woman show, The Polish Diva from Milwaukee, and she brings Broadway style to polka classics like “Who Stole the Keeshka?” and “Blue Skirt Waltz.” But she always respects her source material, putting the focus on the melodies and lyrics, and singing in English, Polish, German, and Slovenian.

While the singing is certainly the focus, there’s some quality musicianship here, too. Accordionist/arranger Toby Hanson of Seattle’s Smilin’ Scandinavians does an excellent job making the classics sound fresh, regardless of style. For me, the key to any polka recording is whether it’s fun — for both the performers and the listeners. From the soaring of Palasz’s voice to the rambunctious xylophone and trombone solos, it’s clear there’s plenty of fun going on at this polka party.

Listen to this clip, which features Palasz singing in Slovenian and some great accordion work from Toby Hanson:

Accordion Players Wanted - London

Accordionist Wanted - Apply Here!
Subject: musicians for show about general strike wanted !
The theatre company "The New Factory of the Eccentric Actor" is doing a show about the general strike 1926 on 21st, 22nd, 23d of September.
All shows are in the evening in Conway Hall, Holborn. I have played music for their large scale theatre shows in the past, but will be too busy to help out this time. They would particulary like some accordion players to provide music for the show, mainly old music hall tunes, possibly some Russian tunes and others, plus incidental music. The shows are always amazing and good fun. I could help out with some music hall scores. If you are interested please get in touch with Penny or Josh on 020 7586 4633.
All the best! -Martina Schwarz

Tejano Conjunto Festival - Sacramento, California
Sep., 8, 2007
Yesterday, I attended the first annual Tejano Conjunto Festival here in Sacramento. The day was a little "warm", but I had a good time with friends and good music. I hope there will be more festivals to come in the future. Here are a few photos that I took...

Conjunto Califas was not on the lineup, but when El Parche was delayed in arriving, they jumped up on staged and kicked butt as always!!!!!

I couldn't resist trying out the toys on display...jeje!

I saw several of the forum members at the festival, and as always, it was great talking to everyone.

The Amazing Sammy Thomas !
.... Sammy Thomas   is serious about the accordion, so serious that he was recently placed first at the U.S. National Accordion Competition. But a few years ago, practicing too much caused muscle injuries in his arm. "My mom took me to a bunch of doctors who all wanted to cut me up," Sammy recalls. "Luckily she didn't let them." Instead, his mom enrolled him in break dancing classes, and the pain went away! Sammy Thomas plays "Chopin's Nightmare" by Joe Spano Click Here to listen!
