Report - Gordon Glenn @ Middlesbrough Concert Success!
Oct., 5, 2007

Gordon Glenn at The Accordion Workshop 8th Sep '07
 - GORDON GLENN  at the Accordion Workshop Stainton Memorial Hall
Middlesbrough on 8th Sept '07.
Tom Baines, who organised and compered the concert, introduced Gordon
on his third visit to the club. Supporting Gordon from the group were
Les Kerridge solo, Lee Taylor solo, David Rodway and Olive Rose  and
Rob and Margaret Trigg duets and Tom Baines Barry Welburn Campbell
Davidson and David Armstrong played a quartet.
Gordon took the stage with a classical tango,a Harry Hussey jazzed up
version of "don't blame me" leading on to his arrangement of Rodrigo's
" Concierto de Aranjuez" normally written for guitar/orchestra
Gordon moved smoothly on to negro spirituals, and a group favorite
"under Paris skies,".
Umbrella man in Paris arranged by his late friend Glyn Evans provided
a great French atmosphere. He played several Charles Magnante's
arrangements "what a difference a day makes"  and "yours" with a great
swing sound.
His final number "Dance of the Comedians"brought the house down on a
truly profesional performance.
He will be welcomed back in the near future.

Emily Smith - News!
Sep., 29, 2007
After months of me talking about making a new album I am very happy to announce that the recording is now complete.  I’ve been juggling touring and recording on and off since the beginning of the year which is why it has taken a fair bit of time to get it done.  The album was produced by me and Jamie (McClennan) and although it was a lot of hard work and tiring on the ears - we’re really happy with the result. The material is again a mix of my own songs and traditional material with a few crossovers in there too.  I’ve named the album Too Long Away which is a line from one of the songs.  For me it sums up how I have felt over the past year since moving back to the area I grew up in and realising that this is where I feel most at home.
Hopefully you’re now feeling as excited about the new album as I am!  There’s just one thing – you’re going to have to wait just a few more months (well about 4 to be exact...) until you can get your hands on a copy.  I had planned to release the album this year but have now decided to license the album to another label so that I can concentrate more on being a musician and less on running a record label.  So, I hope you’ll bear with me for now.  There are lots of things going on behind the scenes right now so I should have more details for you next time.I’ve mainly been playing festivals at weekends over the summer months which has been great fun.  I’ve been playing with a four piece band and it’s been great to get the new material out there and play it live after lots of studio time.  Despite the wash out of a summer, we’ve been blessed with sunshine at the festivals – Sidmouth and our wee trip to Iona was especially lovely.  There are a few festivals remaining so if you want to come and hear some of the new material then check out the gigs listed below.  If you’re not into the festival vibe then I’ll be playing a few dates in England during September, again with the full band.

Eastbourne Accordion Festival 2006
Sep., 29, 2007
Pictured above at John & Jackie Romero's extremely successful Eastbourne Accordion Festival are Romeo Aichino, Lisa-Lee Leslie, Ron Bennett, Gary Blair & Sue Bennett. The event took place at the Cumberland Hotel in Eastbourne, East Sussex (Frid. 17th - Mon. 20th Feb. 2006). A happy atmosphere prevailed throughout this well supported Accordion Weekend event on the south coast. The event sold out in advance and was a credit to the many months of hard work and preparation by John & Jackie Romero (Carillon Studios), their expertise in organising organ and keyboard festivals was apparent throughout this magical weekend dedicated to the accordion.Credit must also go to the many performers, teachers & traders who were in attendance.
The event ran like clockwork from start to finish, there was always plenty going on, the food was delicious and well presented, the hotel staff were friendly and helpful, the rooms were cosy and nicely decorated but above all  "Accordion Camaraderie & Fun" were the weekend theme.Little touches from John & Jackie made the difference here, for instance a personalised welcome pack for everyone on arrival including a detailed programme of events, a free chocolate bar and a magazine. Also included were complimentary afternoon tea, coffee biscuits & cakes served in the comfort of the ballroom daily at 4pm with musical accompaniment provided by George Bennett (Yamaha Tyros)  and Harry Hussey (Borsini Special). These personal touches made the festival that much more enjoyable and relaxed, however 10 hours of seminars & tuition were still slotted into the weekend schedule of events (covering all standards from beginners, advanced to jazz) and in the evening's over 12 hours of concerts were included in the ballroom, even a Gary Blair Ceilidh was enjoyed by all on the saturday night as the chairs were quickly pushed aside to accommodate the many dancers and to test the sprung dance floor, it reminded me very much of the fabulous wild saturday evening Ceilidhs Gary has provided for decades at Scarborough.  Eastbourne Artists included: Charlie Watkins - Gary Blair - Gennaro Fiondella - Harry Hussey - John Leslie - Lisa-Lee Leslie -Romeo Aichino - John Romero - Trevani & George Bennett with a guest appearance by Alan Young Teachers at the festival were Sue Bennett - Gary Blair - Gennaro Fiondella - Harry Hussey - John Leslie & Trevani. Organisations and Traders were represented by: Accordions of London - W.E.M. -Trevani Studios - Stan Mayhew - Cooperativa - Carillon Studios - UKAO - Roland UK - The Accordion Shop Sunningdale (Chris Lovell).
The Polish Diva’s Polka Party
Sep., 29, 2007
Terry Palasz isn’t your average polka singer. Classically trained with a powerful soprano, she puts a unique twist on traditional polka music with her album, The Polish Diva’s Polka Party. The album grew out of her one-woman show, The Polish Diva from Milwaukee, and she brings Broadway style to polka classics like “Who Stole the Keeshka?” and “Blue Skirt Waltz.” But she always respects her source material, putting the focus on the melodies and lyrics, and singing in English, Polish, German, and Slovenian. While the singing is certainly the focus, there’s some quality musicianship here, too. Accordionist/arranger Toby Hanson of Seattle’s Smilin’ Scandinavians does an excellent job making the classics sound fresh, regardless of style. For me, the key to any polka recording is whether it’s fun — for both the performers and the listeners. From the soaring of Palasz’s voice to the rambunctious xylophone and trombone solos, it’s clear there’s plenty of fun going on at this polka party.Listen to this clip, which features Palasz singing in Slovenian and some great accordion work from Toby Hanson:Terry Palasz: Silk Umbrella Polka (MP3 download)

 - Dear UKAO: Following is the information pertaining to the Jermyn Street Theatre London return of our show, Pennies From Heaven:  The Life and Songs of Arthur Tracy, 'The Street Singer'. We would very much appreciate it if you could include our show amongst your upcoming listings.  Arthur Tracy was one of the most famous "accordionists" (though it wasn't really him playing!) of the 1930's, both in the U.S. and the U.K.  We'll be featuring noted London accordion virtuoso, Romano Viazzani, who will be playing many original and vintage arrangements of accordion tunes of that era.  Very best wishes, Gregory Moore, Steve Ross and Romano Viazzani.   -  Press Release:-  PENNIES FROM HEAVEN: THE LIFE AND SONGS OF ARTHUR TRACY, 'THE STREET SINGER' returns to the Jermyn Street Theatre, 2-7 October, 2007. Internationally-known American cabaret star, Steve Ross, is joined by New York singer/writer, Gregory Moore, and London-based accordion virtuoso, Romano Viazzani, in their acclaimed salute to the late Arthur "The Street Singer" Tracy. Arthur Tracy was a phenomenally popular radio, film and recording star of the 1930’s, first in America, then in the UK, where he lived for nearly 5 years, topping the bill at the London Palladium on many occasions. He is still remembered today as “The Street Singer,” which was his musical alter ego. Though seemingly forgotten for many decades, Tracy made an unwitting comeback in 1981, when his recording of the song, “Pennies From Heaven” was used as the title track for the American film of that name. This led to a featured role in a Broadway show (Social Security) and a cameo appearance in a hit film (Crossing Delancey) and a CD reissuing of many of his hit records of the 30’s, such as “Marta,” (his theme song), “The Way You Look Tonight” and, of course, “Pennies From Heaven”.

"Pennies" premiered at the Jermyn Street Theatre in February of this year and was much-acclaimed (and sold out). Performances are at 19:30 on 2-6, October, and there are 2 matinee performances at 16:00 on 6-7 October. Tickets are £18 (£14 concession).--Reservations can be made by calling the Jermyn Street Theatre's box office at :-020 7287 2875-Click here for an online booking form !--Arthur Tracy - "The Street Singer" - sings Marta & Trees.
Roland V - Accordion Challenge - News Update!
Sep., 8, 2007
 Hi Accordionists,
Just to let you know that Roland have extended their deadline until 10th Sept.
This is to allow time for entrants who have requested entry to the competition by way of an audio recording instead of video.  It will also give a chance to those who received their entry forms late due to an office error and postal strikes to get their entry in.

Best Wishes -  Romano Viazzani
